hi all, i could need a little bit of advise for my current campaign,
im in may 1941 right outside of Gibraltar and have spotted a revenge battleship whit 8 (yes 8!!) destroyer escorts, (tribals, hunters and flowers i belive)
im in perfect position for a classic T-bone attack, the front escorts have passed me and the revenge battleship will pass me at about 1,300m
normaly i would go for it, but this time im unsure,
just 1 day earlier i had a battle against a small destroyer taskforce (wich i won,) but my hull structure is around 25% after that confrontation.
i doubt i would survive much more wasserbombs.
sneaking away after that attackwill also be very hard since i cant go very deep becasue of my low hull structure.
on the other hand if i survie an attack i think i will get some very nice medals, maybe even doenitz invites me over for dinner (or if i die maybe he comes to my funeral) :)
what do you think? should i go for it and possible die as a hero or should i think about the safety of my crew and return home? :hmm:
im playing RUB 1,4 whit some of my own modifications on 80% realism

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Fire away mr. Deckard. Its a shame they wont live. But the again, who does.
I found a Carrier in '43 with 6 escorts. I attacked and sank the carrier with my last 2 torps and managed to evade for quite a while before my first ever encounter with hedgehogs :dead:
It was worth it though, I'm sure my funeral was attended by many important people ;)

25% hull vs. 8 escorts. Thats a tough one but not for the escorts.
I'd say your survival rate is about 10%. Now if the attack is in
dark of night, it could be higher. DD's tend to use searchlights
more than sonar in darkness. They think you are on the surface,
not submerged....

Attack anyway!
Afterwards follows a cat-mouse game which I like more than other features of SH3!

run away! run away!
nah just kidding.
I think a real-life captain would feel obligated to risk boat and crew for a target like that.

:arrgh!: :arrgh!: Sink em captain, or else your u-boat will be comendered by monkeys next patrol :arrgh!: :arrgh!:
... BDU is assuming that a lack of response from the U-boat that this message eminated from, that indeed an attack was inniated and the boat has subsequently been lost!......
Any news??

"Der Alte will angreifen?" - "Yup."
"Wir sind im Arsch..." - "Yup." (Text written in Fraktur-font.)
"The Old Man wants to attack?" - "Yup."
"We are in the *ss..." (German saying when you are in deepest rouble...) - "Yup."

It's suicide, kamerad, so just do it.
Is there any sort of deepish water exit for you? Otherwise get well ahead and do a stand-off attack as a compromise, if the Carrier is sailing straight?
I think you know that a 25% boat in shallow water against 8 irritated destroyers can only end one way
The alternative is explaining to Doenitz how you had a capital ship with a major strategic bearing on the Mediterrainean campaign in your periscope, closed bow caps and ran!
Tough call, but it was done.
Although no boats that successfullly penetrated the Med, ever got out....

i regret to inform you all that kaptain hanz deckard and his u-boat has been lost whit all hands at sea.
i did decide to attack, i felt that having to go home and explain that i had been 1,300 meters away from a enemy capital battleship whitout doing nothing wasnt a option.
just before sunrise i attacked at 1,300 meters, i fired all forward tubes at the battleships aiming for the fuel and machinery and imidiatly crashdived,
all torps hit the target, and on external cam i could se a huge fireball emerging from the battleship.
the destroyers didnt wait to come after me, whitin 5 minutes they had my position fixed and camed after me.
the deph charges hailed over me like nothing i had ever seen before,
aruond my u-boat there was a exploding underwater inferno.
it truly felt like the apocalypse.
after 10 minutes a dephcahrge hit and destroyed my diveplanes, including flooding my forward torpedo room,
i braced myself as my u-boat rushed for the deep in a increasing speed and my repair crew worked at overdrive to repair the damage,,,, but it was to late.
at 120 meters my damaged u-boat couldnt handle the pressure anymore and imploded, all hands lost. :(
i didnt survive to se if the battleship went down, it still had speed when i died but whit heavy fire onboard

Did you persoanlly man the hydrophone station during your evasion? This might have helped.
Before your next career, may I also suggest reading Red Devil's Escape & Evasion tutorial (http://hometown.aol.co.uk/dominicobaggio/EscapeEvade.html)? :yep: :know:
You did the right thing
Kaptain Hellbling and the crew of U-143 mourn this loss and are inspired by your heroism.
