I decided to do something I normally dont do..I decided to go into a harbor..Scapa for that matter and found a Battleship there.

There was only 1 escort stopped behid her so I go into postion and fired off 3 torps from my TypeIIa and set a course away from the area to reload.

All were set to impact detonation and slow running to give me time to clear the area before they hit and 1 fish blew prematurely 40' from the BB..alerting both it and the DD.The other 2 continued on..one impacting dead center of the BB the other in the engine room area stopping the ship dead in the water. The destroyer moved toward my position when I fired but needless to say I had already cleared out so he was no threat.I circled back after reloading and got into position to fire the last 2 torpedoes.

I fired the last 2 and one was a dud..the second hit between the front 2 turrets and causing her to capsize and hit the bottom and stuck there...PREVENTING her from sinking all the way.And since she did not go all the way down nor did she go up in a huge explosion I did not get the sinking credit nor any reknown for it..GRRRR :damn: :damn: :damn: :damn:

This is the picture of her final position before I left to return to base..

Needless to say I consider that a sinking because the too shallow waters of Scapa Flow prevented it from going all the way down so I will be editing my reknown accordingly.Just bugs me that it wont be showing in my patrol reports.

Well you've sunk her allright, but have you destroyed her? I wouldn't be so sure about it, as shallow waters can give a ship a second chance, you know.

Examples?

Italian BB "Conte di Cavour" had been sank 3 (three) times. In Tarent by the British in '40, then in Triest by the Italians themselves in '41 and then finally by Americans in '45.

US BBs "West Virginia" and "California" had been sank by the Japanese in Pearl Harbour '41, but they had been lifted, refitted and had served in line again.

There are more examples of this as well.

The HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Valient were sunk in shallow water by Italian frogmen with explosives, but were both raised and repaired.

The light cruiser USS Raleigh settled on the bottom of Pearl Harbour as well during the attack, but was put back into service.

The destroyer USS Stewart was scuttled in shallow water, but was salvaged by the Japanese and commissioned as Patrol Boat 102.

There are also accounts of merchant ships sunk in shallow water which were raised and put back in service, although I can't think of any specific cases right now.

Sometimes, even if a ship broke in two and one half remained afloat, the surviving half could be salvaged. This happened to the US tanker Esso Nashville, torpedoed by U-124 in 1942.

There are however, cases of ships being sunk in shallow water and staying there.

The Arizona and Oklahoma were sunk in Pearl Harbour, but were too badly damaged to repair, although the Oklahoma was raised. Some history books try to claim that the Oklahoma was repaired though, but this is incorrect.

The German light cruiser Konigsberg was sunk while docked during the Norwegan campaign, and although she was raised and towed back to Germany, she could not be repaired.

The Royal Oak was a total loss after being sunk in Scapa Flow.

Also, Axis ships sunk near the end of the war were usually permanently disabled, as the country which owned them would no longer have the capacity to repair them. Such was the case of the Japanese warships sunk in Kure in 1945 (BB Haruna, BB Hyuga, BB Ise, CV Amagi, CA Tone, CA Aoba, CL Oyodo, DD's and SS's).

So there are some occasions in which it makes sense not to get credit for destroying a ship in shallow water, but IMO, if it completely explodes or even capsizes completely, it should probably be credited as it is most likely a total loss.

This would be true...if the game took the possibilty of raising the ship again into consideration.Which it does not as far as I know.

The problem is the ships in the game once they have any part of them hit the bottom in shallower waters have a bad habit of getting stuck in that positin and wont budge anymore no matter what you do to them.

Like in Hartlepool once..I snuck in and hit the Tanker that is docked there in the rear..It went down by the rear but hit bottom and sat there a 1/4 way under water and not moving and simply stuck there..and nothing else I did would send that ship down..And again I got nothing for the effort.

With my Typ IIA, in exactly the same situation, I launched a salvo of three torps in the most vunerable section (according to the vounerability mod / ship ident. book). The Revenge lasted about 5 seconds...
