I reinstalled SH3 and patched to 1.4b. Using the mod enabler, I enable RUB 1.43 and then the RUB patch. Those are the only 2 mods or files I added for this test. Using SH3 commander, I start a new career and launch the game. After I startup in the sub and I go to the map and scroll into the Soviet Union, the game crashes. I had a few previous patrols ended this way too with numerous other mods enabled, so I reinstalled and just enabled RUB to see what I could figure out.

It kicks to the desktop with sh3 still on the taskbar and the music running for another few seconds, then it locks up and I get the end now dialog box. This crash happens every time (3 tests with just RUB enabled and numerous other times with RUB plus a lot of other mods) for me as I scroll/drag the map to the right towards Moscow.

Sometimes I can get to Stalingard and a bit beyond, but never ever close to China or Japan. It usually happens as I get near Moscow. It seems like the scroll/drag speed I'm moving the map with doesn't matter. I can creep up on the area or drag quickly. If I'm dragging fast, the map scroll speed stutters then the screen goes black and I'm back at the desktop.

If I disable RUB and the RUB patch, I can scroll all over the map just fine, no stutters and no crashes. I started searching for individual files to swap in and out to replace RUB files with patch 1.4 originals.

I discovered if I replace the RUB version of data/terrain/locations.cfg with the patch 1.4 version, everything is fine. No crashes when scrolling with RUB. I assume I'm the only getting this? Any guesses why or what might be the culprit?

EDIT: Whoops, still getting it with locations.cfg replaced with the non RUB version. I'll try disabling RUB and making sure the crash isn't there on stock 1.4b patch.

I have a 2.6 ghz p4, 1 gig of ram, and an ati 9600xt.

After more testing with vanilla 1.44b patch, I can reproduce the crash there too, so never mind. Not always, but if I "grab" the map on the right side and quickly move the mouse to the left I can cause the crash. I'll try a different video driver and maybe an earlier patch.

It seems to have been a driver issue. I went back to catalyst 5.8 drivers from 5.9 and I couldn't reproduce the crash. The map would stutter when making large drag moves, but it would not kick to the desktop. I tested once without RUB and once with, so hopefully it was just a driver issue.

Using search would help :nope: I guess rolling the driver back won't fix the problem in the end, but I was scrolling all around russia like a madman for sometime without a crash after going back to 5.8. Oh well.
