Hello all, I just got this game and I have 2 questions...

When I start a career, after doing the 1939 1st Flotilla Patrol, went to grid and patrolled it for 24 hours, and it said I had both objects completed. I returned to the harbor and clicked on Dock at Wilhel...

But when i go into Mission from menu, it's the same patrol mission !! I did it three times but nothing new comes up, what is wrong here ? Please help been trying forever

Question #2..
When does new submarines and items etc pop up for you to buy ? I have cheated so I get 1.000.000 renowns (please don't bash me) But still there are no new items for me to get. Must I complete more missions or what ?

Thanks in advance!

dont know about the first question, but I had some problems with the grid too (always grid NULL :-? ) and I just started a new career, no troubles ever since

the second is easy: try pressing the ?-button on the bottomright of the loadout screen. There you'll see a timeline with all the toys and you'll notice that there just isnt much to play with in 39.
Try starting in 42, 42

Yup, upgrades come in a historical fashion, with most technical advances that had been dreamed up in 40 becoming operational in 42-43

Try doing it with the 7thFlottila and see what happens if it works you can always transfer back to the 1st

Re Question 1.

You went to the patrol zone and then just returned home? After doing the zone I always went hunting around Scappa Flow in the early days of my career. Never a shortage of targets.

I haven't sunked any ships on the first patrol, is that necessary to continue on to next mission ? I keep getting Radio messages that I need to Be More Agressive !

The completion of the Grid sequence just gives you reknown.
Your MAIN Mission is to sink enemy shipping, concentrating on
the merchants carrying war supplies. Sink a few enemy ships
and things should start changing in your future patrols....

BdU gave you torpedos, they expect you to use them,
not bring them back to Wilhem !!!

Ok, thanks.

So there is no pop-up box saying that you have completed your mission etc ?

I just complete the objectives and sink a few ships, then return to dock and press the Return to XXX button ?

But how do you know how many ships you have to sink ?

There really aren't "missions" to complete. You're pretty much free to do what you want, and your objectives are largely what you want them to be. You can go to your patrol zone and stay their for 24 hours if you'd like, or ignore it entirely. I almost always patrol it, since it's easy renown and it gives patrols some structure. Plus, there are a number of mods that change the stock patrols in order to allow you to take part in historic operations, such as Drumbeat and the invasion of Norway.

As others have said, sinking Allied tonnage is really the point. Sill, there's no requirment in the game that you sink X tons of shipping. Usually after I've completed my 24 hours in a patrol zone, I'll find a nearby convoy lane to patrol. I'll hunt around until I'm either out of torpedos, low on fuel, I've exhausted my crew, or my boat is too beat up to stay out any longer. In any case, you're pretty much free to do whatever you want. Just don't expect huge renown if your spend all your patrols enjoying the sunny Bahamas without actually sinking any of the ships sailing there! :arrgh!:

Getting the same patrol zone twice in a row seems to be in the gray area between feature an bug - I have this happen all the time. After having patrolled the same zone twice, I've never been ordered back a third time.

BTW, welcome to SH3! :D

Beery's Sub Commander mod allows you to choose your own patrol grid, if you so desire. The mod is stand-alone (and easy to install), so it won't wreck your game files, and there's a number of options to use as much or as little of the mod in your game as you wish.

Above is Beery's website. He also has some other nice mods, but not all are for beginners.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I have one more question, is there any mod out there that will help me find out in what direction a ship is going and that sort of auto updates his position as time goes ? Im finding it hard to locate ships that the sonar or watchmen has spotted...thanks

Do you have the map updates option on? You should see every single contact on your map if it is on.

a followup question for anyone...

will there ever be a "mission" besides a patrol grid?

Like: "find the Titanic and sink her" ?

Or will patrols be the only thing I can look forward to?

No, but maybe in the future one of our modders changes that somehow.
