Do medics automatically goto where they are needed, or does he need to be in the same compartment as the injured, or...?

Your medic and wounded have to be in the same berthing compartment. Berthing is the "infirmary" on a uboat.

You'll notice that the medic qualification badge is the same as the one above either quarters. The medic and injured have to both be in either compartment.

And your medic will heal wounded crew back to health, not just stop them from dying. So if you want your hard earned wound badges, keep away from that medic ;)
