Hi all,

I'm new and I've been playing with some mods including the crew viatmins mod. I'd love some recommendations on how to rack up some tons by finding convoys more consistently and capital ships at sea. Also, if you could recommend mods to me. I'm looking for things to make the game less micromanagement based and more fun not necessarily more realistic. I'd love to plug in Real U-Boat, but I don't know how to turn some features off (e.g. I'm totally happy with an unrealistically high number of convoys). Need to get rid of the uber destroyers though.

Thanks,

Geoff

For convoys, the best place I've found to hang out is the area around AL03 and AL38 off western Scotland. You can almost always catch convoys doing the Halifax - Liverpool run.

For single ships, my favorite place is the 4 grids of BE39 & 63 and BF17 & 41, off southwest Ireland. Especially 1939 thru 1941 when the air cover doesn't reach there. You can catch a lot of single ships there, mostly coastal & small merchants, and C2's & C3's, with an occaisional tanker thrown in.

For mods, I'm only running SH3 Commander, v 1.43. It's got a lot of different mods added to a very cool career manager. Lots of folks on here are running RuB, but that's a little too hardcore for me! I'm happy with my 73% realism. If you do a search on UnRealUBoat, you can get a list of the things that can be turned off with it.

One thing that works for me is concentrating on chokepoints - locations like straits and channels where a lot of merchant traffic has to travel. I like the grids just south of Ireland and North of France, especially early in the war. The English Channel's not too bad if you don't mind heavy patrols. You should also try the area just west of Scotland where many convoy routes intersect and curve southward towards the end of their voyages. If you want to sink capital ships you should probably try a career in the Mediterranean, where there is an unusually high concentration of major warships. Don't waste your time in the middle of the Atlantic or the middle of the North Sea; very few ships can be found there. OTOH, the North Sea and Atlantic coasts typically have more shipping, especially the US's and Britain's east coasts.

My happy hunting grid has been BF13 during 1940. I see a lge.
convoy going wsw at 6 kts. about every 72 hrs. Usually about
16-20 merchants with up to 4 escorts so far. No air traffic.
Water is shallow in some spots but can go as deep as 130 meters
in the darker map areas. Too date in 9 patrols, I have probably
sunk about 200,000 tons there, merchants only. I have NEVER
fired on a warship yet. Waste of torps unless it has at least a
tonnage rating of 5000. 1941 may bring some new developments
to the war patrols. I sure hope so, getting sort of mundain out
there lately. I want some unexpected action to happen. Get me
out of this rut and let the juices start flowing again....
