Hi,

It's the end of my first week of SHIII and I've managed 9 patrols, sinking 26k tons of shipping.

I've just managed to work out that neutral ships should be left alone!

So anyway, I've been moved to Brest I think and on my first patrol out of there I was ordered to patrol off the Firth of Forth!! This is crazy, why aren't I doing Brittany or the Channel? Is it just me that thinks this is weird?

However, I did as I was told and got caught in shallow water by 2 destroyers and depth charged - lost with all hands...

If you haven't discovered it yet, there's a good reason why they call it the ENGLISH Channel. Once you get into 1940, I would suggest that crossing the Channel and crossing into the Med past Gibraltar are extremely risky propositions.

The orders can get even weirder: I have received orders to patrol grids that I could never reach!
BdU can be a pain in the ass sometimes!

Sometimes it is best to forgo the reknown and ignore the orders.
Especially if it is much too dangerous. I also have done 9 patrols
but error on the side of caution. Have nearly 300 thousand tons
and counting. Out of Lorient still using the VIIB, Dec. 1940.
I get a good amount of tonnage in BF13, a hotspot of merchant
activity......MANY, MANY CONVOYS....... (had 3 in 6 days)

JIM

PS. Always try to stay in the deepest water parts of BF13

so far i have followed my orders to the letter until one day i had to patrol in between england and ireland, so i set off per normal submerged during the day when close to england to avoid planes and random destroyers, and i surface during the night to recharge batteries.... well there i was minding my own business when i got a contact report, large convoy spotted heading NE doing 6kts well you did'nt need to order me twice :P so off i went shadowing this convoy bypassed the escorts and got into the perfect position and i saw 2 T3 tankers i check and no they are not neuteral sooo... fire tubes 1,2 a minute later my WO shouted ( dont know why he shouted i'm only 2ft from him  ) torpedo impact, torpedo impact, up scope check the target and yes she's sinking so on to the next T3..fire tubes 3,4 i look at the watch NOOOO they have missed  but then WO torpedo impact, torpedo impact, check the scope and shes broke in half by now it's dawn and the ecorts are pinging like crazy, we have been dectect sir up scope and see this black swan closing from behind..FAST so fire tube 5..CRASH DIVE hard to port ahead flank.... run silent....torpedo missed, destroyer on attack run, depth charges in the water sir, i've been hit Heavy flooding, stop all engines finaly got my flooding under control still getting pinged but the destroyer that depth charged me was finally sunk by the acustic that i fired ages ago hehe, anyway now this convoy has gone out of sight i surface and flank speed... i know it was risky but who cares ;) ship spotted... periscope depth and it's the same convoy so i pick off as many merchants as i can, the escorts are really angry so i back away slowly, well im now out of torps except one stern torp, an acustic so i get to my patrol grid 24 hours later still no contacts, so i head home feeling happy i got a total of 2 tankers and 6 other ships including that destroyer take that royal navy. Almost out of british waters when my deck crew spot aircraft just as he said that a wall of bombs fell across my hull :damn: i think he may of lost his glasses because he was short sighted :P well after 5 mins of constant bombing i finally sank with all crew  so as FAdmiral has stated sometimes it is best to forgo orders if it is too dangerous
