Back in the SH2 days i use to play over a LAN. One friend would be a destroyer using the Destroyer Command game while i was the Sub using SH2 game, we would hunt each other down. This gameplay BEATS Multiplayer verse AI missions. Even now when I go online Im playing against the DUMB AI. Im sick of it cos you know how the AI is going to react, its simple gameplay.
But when up against another human player you dont know what hes going to do next. Play against another Human whos got a Destroyer and is bent on sinking your ass, is unspeakable tense heart-attack marterial! It really makes gaming more realistic and not to mention the odd argument to go with it .
Picture this, very rough weather, fog heavy your in a IXC on the surface, theres a destroyer very close out there some where only thing is its your mate not an AI. You know this because an AI will fire at you Auto within 1000 yrds a Human wont cos he cant see you...yet.

We use to play whole weekends!

Everyone's going on about we need a SH4, yet im quite content with SH3. What i reckon is more important is Destroyer Command 2.

I am looking forward to SH4 because I have heard that we will finally get to be the Japanese. They had some great subs, wonderful torpedoes, and lousy tactics. I plan to change that last part.

Remember... there has been nothing official about the content of SH 4.

Sounds very nice. Increasing challenge as the war goes on, like in the Atlantic... not as with US subs in the Pacific, which in the last months sunk fishing boats with hand grenades because they ran out of targets.
Looking forward to driving I-400 :D

So you are the sub, and your friend is the destroyer.

You miss each other, and then you never ever find each other again in the massive ocean expanse.

So what your saying is your never played a match with SH2 and DC.

You never miss each other unless your a really really stupid player or Blind and deaf you probably would. The maps are small say 10 square miles. And im only talking about one of many types of missions that can be played using the SH2/DC games. another we use to play often was protect the convoys where you the sub and your mates protecting the convoy in his escort while you sinking as many as you can.

Put it this way Nothing beats playing against human players., i would rather spend hrs looking for a human player in his destroyer than a stupid AI that does the same thing everytime.

Agreed.

I played SH2 vs DC, Once we had a Multiplayer game going before Messerwetzer came out. Everybody got dropped except for me and my enemy.

Im in some Norwegian harbor at Periscope Depth nearly scraping the bottom of the harbor. He comes steaming 25+ in the harbor after about a 10 minute wait. I lined up from 1000. I misjudged the shot from a 4 tube spread, He sees the wake's and turns tight towards me, Here it comes, he pings the crap out of me. And Desperatley try to turn the ship around and load some eel's. I go Flank speed to turn and hes closing fast.

I manage to get my stern facing his bow at less than 400. Its a 1 and a million shot. WHAM! His burning hull glided inches past me to a slow stop and began to sink. :arrgh!:

That was one of the few times I played at Ubi. From then on, I played over my network. Nothing beats a human opponent.

hehehe

Yup i remeber Messerwetzer. And who could forget the editor mod that came out KD2 editor brilliant i created alot of 1 on 1 missions. I use to have fun telling my mate just before my torpedo would strike i would yell across the room and say "Is your sonar asleep again? Then Boom! or he would say to me just before he would ram me from behind with the words Your Lookouts arren't doing there job, i would know what that meant and look behind me only to see his Destroyer bow within inchs from my sub... too late. We even went as far as bet money on who would sink who first! :D

I mean we are lucky to have multiplayer in SH3 they could of left that out. But more important is Destroyer Command 2 . Maybe if we ever get the SDK it would be possible for the programmers out there to create a type of Destroyer option for SH3. Wishful thinking i know.

I would definitely buy a destroyer command 2 for this game. They could keep the entire engine, but just make the destroyers playable by a human player. You could even have a career escorting convoys etc.

Multiplayer would be cool, but I would settle to just play the single-player game the way it is, just with the destroyers.

I bought Destroyer Command and played it all of 3 times before putting it on my shelf to collect dust.

Never could really get into it.I played it online twice to see if it was any better that way.I was wrong..I could barely play cause of the lag..let alone actually being able to stay connected.I just found DC to be a very boring game all around.Just not my cup of tea.

I myself would buy SH4 before I would buy a Destroyer Command 2.

Thanks for letting us know - this may help other people who are having problems running SH3CMdr or any other mods.

Thats true for me too. I never played destroyer Command the Campaign nor even the single missions, only reason i brought it was to play over a LAN. I never tried it online cos at the time i read to much negatives about the lag while playing the game. But LAN she was a blast to play against a SH2 player.

If they brought out Destroyer Command 2 i probably wouldn't even play the campaign. I would go straight to multi and set up a LAN match. Although i do know the graphics of the ships would probably be very good. so the campaign might be tempting.

How the hell did that message get in there? strange what i was suppose to add in the quote is this.

I agree 100% with Kiwi. Sh2vsDC was the best fun I had with a game ever. We'd just play the same Gibraltar mission over and over again. DD's would sprint and drift and the subs would go on the surface until they got fired upon, or sometimes sit silently and wait for the DD to go off on a false trail. Problem was just about no one wanted to be DD commanders because it was so much harder to get a kill combared to being in a UBoat. And then Covet figured out the idea of replacing the DD's with BB's. We'd have 4 way scraps, the Bismark, Royal Oak (My Fav) Yamato and I cant remember the American one. Guns on manual, that was fun.

as far as AI vs human opponents... i say a mix of both... the sub crew would never know whether they were going up against real or ai... and neither would the skimmers on top

finally (a mini rant), i think that the reason we are so bored with sub vs ai is twofold...

1- not enough involvement with the sub... D to dive is not really immersive enough... and doesn't offer enough hands on... and maybe more than one player in the crew...

2- the ai is either too smart, or too dumb... an ai that will 'think out' the situation... trail you from your baffled areas... go silent and wait for you to make the next move... ai tanker captains that'll run into a dense fog bank... turn on you and ram you...

ever see the movie "The Bedford Incident" ?

a lil past WWII, but a naval sim with some of the elements from that film could be quite challenging... and fun... for both the destroyer crew, and the sub crew players...

SH4 or Destroyer Command 2 would need to have one or two innovations in terms of graphics / programming cleverness in order for it to capture interest in a wider market, and also to make it more exciting for us hardcore fanatics. A change of theatre/vessel and improved eye candy is not enough...

One thing that is a must for the new sim is full 1st person camera movement around a ship that has a full interior, and proper collision. A sub should have lots of technical stuff for us play with, like manual valves, switchboards and so on. Also, an AI crew would be great.

Things like being able to fall overboard, or even leave the ship and go ashore, add greatly to the feeling of immersion in these games. There could also be special missions where may be you drop off assault teams from subs in scuba gear and dingies like the British did in WWII. A new SH4 ought to include min-subs.

Refueling, resupplying, visiting ports should also be possible. Proper wireless communication too. If SH4 is another German U-boat sim, you should be able to hear messages coming in, as morse. You could have stuff like Enigma machines where, as in Das Boot, certain messages only for the captian can be decyphered bu the player, using a virtual enigma machine.

Another thing that would be good is being able to abandon ship, surrender, or even use escape gear.

And it's also time to have some realistic coastlines, that have proper fjörds, proper cliffs and proper harbours. (And proper trees!!)

And I've said this time and time again. We need a toilet on the sub, with a working flush.

That's what I think :smug:

I had both SH2 & DC. I enjoyed playing both online but usually found myself playing as a DD because there were usually so few of us. The DC game had many more stations to keep track of so I found myself switching continually between sonar, depth charges, CIC & radio(Updating con info to other DDs). A more seamless way to switch back & forth would probably be necessary as that part of the online game became very time-consuming.

I was biased towards DC because that's what I did in the USN as a DD sonarman for 6 years aboard USS Schofield(DEG-3) & USS Elmer Montgomery(DE-1082).
