I got my Broadband back today and got a surprise.
Went to check my connection speed and saw I have a 2Mb connection...downstream that is.
Upstream is still 276 :(
what the hell, better than 512.

Lol, yeah, that one got me too. WTH, as long as it don't cost me any more. You are right about the upstream, though. It should really be boosted as well.

Thing is I did a BB test on a few sites and it is saying 512 Kb connection.
I wonder if the 2Mbs is between the modem and my PC
WTH I don't care I am just glad I have my BB back.

No, I don't think so, my Dl speeds have been blindingly fast since they changed it. I do seem to have been on a few sites that seem to limit it,possibly due to bandwith issues although I can't really say I understand too much about it. Its all just strange mojo weirdness as far as I'm concerned. :D

Egan who is your ISP? Mine is Tesco.
Seems you got a free downstream boost. The reason is probably that all the other UK ISPs are boosting too.
The reason your upstream stays the same is cause upstream is far more expensive for ISPs.
The 2mbit is definatly not from your modem to you system, if you have an network card your PC-> Modem will will follow the speed of that (eg 10mbit or 100mb or 1gbit)
If you have your modem on an USB1 port iit will do 12mbit and on USB2 the modem sets the limit, most DSL/Cable modems maxes out around 40MBps

Well Tesco have been on about it but nothing advertised yet on the site, though I did kick up a stink due to the level of service.
I still can't understand why different broadband sites are saying I am at 512 Kb...
On Pipex here; recently had a line upgrade from 512 to 2.2mb (according to modem diagnostic tool) still think it's witchcraft though...
Good service and regular feedback from ISP :yep:

Ah, BT. I assumed you were the same. BT never bothered informing me either until about three or four days ago even though I have had the nboost for about two months now.

I was thinking about changing to Pipex. What sort of price is it and is there a download limit?
Egan,
http://www.pipex.com/
I pay £23.99 for a 1mb service (no download limmit) but this is listed as 2.2mb in my system tray+diagnostic tool (I'm not going to ask questions lol). I assume the upload speed is either 256 or 512k.. not entirely sure which.
- comes with 12 email aliases, ftp space, 10gb newsgroup access thingy and a useful pipex information service teling you about connectivity issues, line maintenance etc.
I've been with Pipex for over 12 months now and other than the fact that it takes about 7-10 days to get a reply to email for tech support (I must stress this was about a line extension cable question- so not really urgent) I have been very happy with the service I've received from them.
They're not the cheapest around, but as me old grandad used to say: "buy cheap, buy twice" as a m8 of mine is having to do now having switched from BT to Demon, who are now dicking him about with a dysmal connection speed for BB. Loads of bad press there :dead: clicky (http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=demon&page=0&view=expanded&sb=5&o=)
My Bt is about the same price for the 2.2meg connection. Although I was only allowed one e-mail adress until last week. I think I'm still unlimited Dl as well.
I have to say that I have never had a problem with my BT connection, it's more that I don't really like the way BT seem to do things. A nunber of times I had no answer from the tech support (although none of the issues were very important,) which doesn't strike me as the best way to do business. I was also really annoyed that when they first moved over to Yahoo for the mail service they never bothered telling me I would have to pay extra for the e-mail service I was getting for free before. luckilly I managed to find a workaround but it still wasn't perfect...
Pipex requires a BT phoneline to connect to the internet, by the way.
I still can't understand why different broadband sites are saying I am at 512 Kb...Could be you tested during UK Peak hours? or maybe capped to 512 during Peaks?
@Egan and everyone else at BT:
You do know that ALL BT customers has a monthly bandwidth restriction right?
Bulldog has a very kick-bum-bum deal £49/mo for phone and 8192/400kilobit (8mbit/0.5mbit)
http://bulldogdsl.com/residential/XPNP/NP/index.asp
I got a buddy on that deal, he says its as fast as they claim, he even gets 512k up, but their support division stinks.

Your tested connection rate was: 1314.2k bps ( ±14k bps )-
Result was calculated at that particular instant. Your result might differ if you are downloading some big stuff, for example.
Xabbus, are you using some proxy server? I am asking because if I have proxy server in IE, the browsing speed is effected in Opera too :x
Xabba, if you can get it you might want to think about Telewest or NTL. Both are going to be offering "greatly" increased speeds in the next few months
ie. My 4 meg line is getting increased to a 10 meg (yes TEN) and the price drops to 35 quid :o :o :o
I believe NTL are going to be doing something similar, BUT they impose download caps whilst Telewest do NOT impose them. Infact they actually advertise the fact that they dont and NTL and BT do have them :rotfl:

Seems I am complaining too much when I have 1.5 MB/384K for less than what you pay for 512/256. I so would trade for 768/768 any day since upstream is what affects your ping times the most if you play anything online.
I evened the odds a bit for ping however by purchasing the DLink wireless gaming router - http://games.dlink.com/products/?pid=370 - a couple weeks back. After playing online with several different programs, I can say it works as advertised. I didn't realize how much my old router affected my ping times, but the new one is rock solid all the time, every time making all online play predicatble to a tee. It automatically prioritizes my gaming traffic (critical time sensitive packets get priority over anything else going on, to the point where the router will fragment an inbound or outbound packet in transmission to make sure my gaming packet gets through on time) over anything else operating on my system, like messenger. I have no idea even when my wife is on her computer anymore since she no longer has any affect on my gaming perf. It is a highly recommended addition to ones NW if you don't mind paying a little extra for a router.

PS. 6 MB / 768K service is coming in a couple months for the same price. 20 MB service is due out in one to two years, so that is where I am going to soon.

Well Tesco have a deal with NTL as far as I know.
Hell I am not complaining, it seems I have a 2 meg connection and telewest aint in Scotland I don't think.
Will have to check it out.

Just had a look for you. No Telewest where you are i'm afraid  but NTL is available, but according to the site only at 1 meg.
Looks like staying with Tesco could be your best option at the moment.

Thats not true.
Why do you think that sDSL and Fibers exists ?
aDSL and Cable is simply cause the ISPs are too cheap to offer you a better service (up speed) whilst still have to be "low priced competive" to aDSL and Cable...
And why should they give you 2/2mbit for £40 if they can charge you the same for 1/256 ?
My ISP doesnt care if I run a FTPd/HTTPd Game or Webhosting site thus they sells 4096/1024 lines in the attempt to compete with 10/10 & 100/100 fibers from the power co's that will be widely available throughout DK within 12-24 months.
