"Down with America" is the title of a recent song by the popular Belgian musician Raymond van het Groenewoud. Written in Dutch and published by EMI , "Weg met Amerika" ("Down with America") will be available in record shops as of next week, and was played on Belgian state radio last Thursday and Friday. Here is a quote from the lyrics of the song:
Hamburgers and coke, yes you already knew
But do you also know the cause of the general decay?
Short-sighted thinking, loud talking
Sticking to one-liners forever
Down with America! Down with the jerks from America
Down with America! [...]

Down with American colonialism
Down with that ugly, biting English
All the Anglo-Saxon pretence, arrogance
Yes, a hot pick up their ass
And that is that [...]

I am from the Belgian, the European panel
And I ask you: “Clear my channel! Clear my channel!”
Megalomaniac unicellular idiots
Kiss my ass, yes, kiss my balls

Incitement to hatred against people based on (i.a.) nationality is a crime in Belgium. In practice however, this law is only enforced when Arab, muslim or African minorities are criticized. Hate speech against the Americans or the British remains unsanctioned, as was recently shown when the leftist newspaper De Morgen published an article that complained about the British, "with their unique mixture of wantonness and arrogance, their pathetic addiction to drink, their bad taste, and actually just their ugliness and thickheaded presence".

In January 2003, the Flemish commercial radio station Q-Music was sanctioned by the Flemish Council for Disputes in Radio and Television, after a complaint from the Center for Equal Opportunities and Opposition to Racism (CEOOR). In their radio show, presenters Erwin Deckers and Sven Ornelis had described Venus and Serena Williams as 'monkeys'. The CEOOR decided that their way of reporting was "a gross insult to all our non-white citizens. The vulgar language [...] contributes to the banalization of racist speech. Hence, the program incited to hate based on race".

More and more, it seems that racist or semi-racist expressions are punished when they originate from popular culture or from right-wing politicians and are directed against muslims, Arabs or Africans, but that similar expressions remain unpunished when they come from 'progressive' artists and leftist intellectuals and are directed against the Americans, the British or the Dutch. In my opinion, the CEOOR and its policies are leading us to a less tolerant society, with more social irritation, distrust and friction. When the state tries to control the thoughts and minds of the people, it will only lose their respect.

Primitive. But it is telling something that such a song is avcceptable to the public nowadays. I do not excuse it, but ask how comes that there is so much bitterness that such texts find an audience that does not hide in secret barns and hidden cellars?

people have the right for free speach so why is it being frown and infringed right now?

just because you dont see some one elses views as right doesnt give you the right to mock or judge because after all its thier opinion not yours you have or can have your own

It's not being infringed, it's being exercised. People are allowed to have opinions about opinions in most western countries.

Excuse enough to invade Belgium me thinks..

Can anyone actually tell me the reason for Belgiums existence? I mean how come France never knobbled it.

I get most countries in the EU but not Belgium, or Luxembourg for that matter....

On a more serious side there is a hypocrisy amongst the lefty liberal PC crowd at the moment.

Its like being white and in the majority is wrong therefore if anything is said that is insulting to whites or critical its OK, but if you say something against minorities, regardless of whether it is insulting racially, just critical then you get jumped on and sent to the race relations panel etc etc...

Personally yea free speech is a pillar of democracy but also the responsibility to use it constructively. I think what he has written is just lunatic crap, the same as the BNP spouting there stuff in the UK... Nothing to get worked up about.

Ice, what Skybird is wondering is how someone like this guy is listened to in the general population, not just by fringe groups who meet in cellars and you don't see cos society thinks they are nuts.

He is a pityful loser who needs the cash. Hadnt heard from him since 1987.

Ignore him. However, he is one of those voices that make up 'democracies'.

I'll fight for this man's right to utter haughty anti American nonsense, just as a generation of Americans ago fought for the right of 'Belgiums' to live and speak in freedom.
But I agree that it is a little bit shamefull towards our American friends to show this clear example of arrogant European oversized selfesteem, combined with a 'Holier than Thou' attitude and his one liner slogans.
However, looking at the guy and reading the text of the song again puts his 'opinion' in the right perspective...
The song really tells you more about the man than about the States...

The guy who made this song is full of crap, and uses some very crude stereotypes that are indeed worse than nazi stuff. But I guess one must not take it seriously. Also, this coming from a little Belgium.. Stick to white chocolate.

This kind of thing is to be expected. Most people in the media in Europe are (extreme) left-wing intellectuals, especially in state-owned TV and radio stations. Even in those media that are not state-owned, many favour the left-wing politicians.

Now, current governments aren't exactly stellar examples of competence and integrity, and left-wing politics can hardly be considered the greatest success story of mankind. So they do the logical thing: use all propaganda channels available to incite hatred against all who are not with them. The left-wing version of "If you are not with us, you are against us."

Note, also, that this retarded propaganda should not be considered representative for all Belgians. Of course, many uninformed (or rather, misinformed by the media) people will believe and repeat such nonsense. But on the other hand, opposition is increasing. Take, for example, the article linked above,
Down with America: the Anti-American Dance
http://www.brusselsjournal.com/node/239
And this one:
Brussels Paper: "Why We Hate the British"
http://www.brusselsjournal.com/node/213

Then, look at the authors:
http://www.brusselsjournal.com/user/1
http://www.brusselsjournal.com/user/2

Both of them are Flemish, i.e. living in the Northern part of Belgium. The second author, Paul Belien, has a long history of publishing articles that are critical of Belgium and its ruling class in the international press (and even got fired from a Belgian newspaper for it). You can see a bit of his work here:
