Hello all.

Used to post here in the SH2 days. Maybe someone remembers me. Anyway...not terribly new to subsims, but new to this one.

Question 1: is it realistic to be able to raise the periscope while submerged at a great depth (say 100 meters) and be able to see the draft of the DD that is stalking you? I seem to remember not being allowed/able to use the periscope when deeper thant 50 or so meters in SH2. What is realistic here?

Question 2: does anyone have any tips for identifying ships? I have been having a difficult time distiguishing between C2's and C3's, for example. I mean advanced tips. I know the basic stuff. First look for how many stacks. Then see how many masts. However, many ships have the same number of masts. Any tips...other than, you know, look harder?

Thanks,
SKinner

Question 1: download the newest edition of RUb (1.43, I believe...) and you won't have to worry, because underwater you won't be able to see a thing. I guess that's the way it should be?

Question 2: experience is all you need. After a while, you won't even need to use your recognition manual for such simple proceedures. Once in a while, you'll have to look up a draft depth or something obscure like that, but you'll know the diff between a C2 and a C3 like the back of your hand...

Not only that but it tells you in the UZO as well, if you are close enough. :)

The in-game recognition manual is your friend. :yep:

Even simpler, just lock onto a target is scope view and click on the word SHIP in the upper right hand target notepad. This will open up the recognition manual to the page of the ship you've locked onto.

Lots more elementary information can be found through the link in my sig's bottom line. :yep:

i look at the lifeboat section to identify a c3 or c2.
At the c3 the section where the boats are mounted is clearly visible near the aft of the ship.
C2´s have the boats more near the bridge and less visible from greater distance.

Thanks for the tip, The Avon Lady i didn´t know that trick too.

A C2 has a blunt end to the stern. A C3 has a good amount of the stern that sticks over the water.

I use the same mentality when looking at T2 and T3s. A T3 has a much more pointed bow.

Me: "What ship is that #1?"
#1: "Not sure sir."
Me: "Where's the recognition manual?"
#1: "Er...it's propping up the mess table sir, it was wobbling."
Me: "Very well #1, did you download the SH3 community manual from Subsim?"
#1: "Er... no sir I forgot."
Me: "Damn it, we'll wait to see what shows in the credits after we sink it.

The smoke stack on the C2 is thin and tall where the C3 has a fat squat stack. Thats how I can tell them apart. :yep:

Thanks!

Good tip on the stout smoke stack on the C3, and also about the lifeboats.

As for the periscope thing...yeah, I wouldn't want to download the entire RuB mod. Personal preference. Also, I have no problem with the situation exactly as it is, but since it was different in the last version, I am wondering if it is realistic. I'm all about realism. I used to play SH2 refusing to go to the map station unless I was navigating. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the no map update feature. In fact, since installing this sim, I have not played it at less than 97% realism (I like the event camera).

Anyway, I'll try the dark water mod if it is determined that in real life a sub could not track a boat visually from 100 meters down. Now, how to find this out...that is the real question. maybe Neal knows.
