When you transfer crew into a compartment, the green bar at the top moves to the right, indicating increasing efficiency.

Assuming that I have it half full of crew and the green bar is all the way over to the right, is their any benefit to putting more crew in that compartment or should I put those guys elsewhere?

The answer isn't simple. It depends on the situation. Also, it stands to reason that continuing to add fresh crew to a compartment with a full green bar will keep it full longer.

Situational Example: You have plotted a course to intercept a convoy hours distant. Variations in your speed equal variations in success of intercept. Inefficient engine compartments will translate into varying speed and increase your error factor.... so keep that bar full and the engines at flank!

I think you misunderstand the question, I want to know if there is any advantage in adding more crew at the time.

ie if the green bar is full (call it at 100%), if I add more crew, can my efficiency go to 110% or will it just stay at 100%?

It stays at 100%.

By the way, the maximum speed is always the same, no matter if the engine room bar is half-green or full-green.

That's odd... I have experienced fluctuations.

... Maybe it was weather/wave related.

I've often thought of tweaking the crew, I wondered if I had a better watch crew on the bridge would they see the smoke on the horizon the same time as I do.

That won´t help, Col. As sensors.cfg says: "Visual uses crew efficiency=false". Even the worst bridge crew spots ships at the same distance as a veteran crew.

Gizzmoe!
Can you explain this for me? I tried both settings, tru/false on watch crew and couldn't notice any difference. Maybe I didn't tried it out long enough!

I have never tried "true". Maybe it´s a feature that "true" doesn´t work for visual sensors, means that "false" is hardcoded.

If your getting lost of runny fluctuations, probably it's a good idea to check on the "Best Before" date when your are eating things right out of the fridge.

As far as your sub is concerned, it and all shipping are subject to the forces of wind and waves, at least to a certain extent.

Roger that Twelvfield. I will start checking the expiration dates personally... and ensuring all fungus is removed from rations prior to consuming them.

:nope: I will also have a chat with the third watchman... I seem to recall him mentioning mushrooms with unusual frequency.

I have also noted that in very heavy seas, the sub will periodically switch to electrics... which could account for variations. (happens when momentarily submerged in big waves.)

... Now why are the walls rippling?

Sure, but that wasn´t because the engine room crew got fatigued. In the same exact weather condition the crew experience does not influence the speed of the boat.

Yeah, it switched with my 1700th post. I don´t like it yet... :)

good thread. Now I have a similar question.

My engine room runs at maximum green bar with One officer machinist and one petty machinist. Both have Gold Cross. My questions are:

-If I add more crew to that compartment, for example, 7 more petty machinists, what effect does this have ?
-Again ... more than 100% efficiency ?
-Does it add more range ?
-Does it mean less fatigue for each individual member ?

Since I only need 2 people in the engine room, if the other 5 petty machinists have no effect I could convert them.

For the visual detection, I'd like to make my crew be able to see things like I can when I am on brideg. I looked at this thread:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=93232&highlight=efficiency

Now I'd like to improve their spotting capability and the ability of my flak gunners to shoot quicker. Can anyone plase give me some insturctions on how to change this.

thanks for the help !
