It's July 1940, and my VIIC is assigned a patrol in the south of the Irish Sea, sailing from Wilhelmshaven.

Last patrol, I penetrated Scapa Flow on the way out and sunk an Auxiliary Cruiser for 13+K tons. Didn't even get detected by the defences. So, I thought, I'll be passing Loch Ewe - why not have a peek in there?

The journey out past the Shetland Isles was uneventful, and I didn't meet any targets. I approached Loch Ewe, and found it heavily defended. Once I was detected, and a DD attacked with depth charges, but I managed to evade and continue into the loch unmolested.

There was a Fiji cruiser, lying at anchor. All this time I kept at periscope depth, silent running, 1kt, creeping around the defences. The weather was clear and calm, and the Fiji was a sitting duck. Four TIIs aimed at various vulnerable spots, and the cruiser was history. 10+K tons. A good start.

Creeping back out again, I was detected and repeatedly attacked by three DDs and a DE, depth-charged, rammed, my attack scope, flak and deck guns destroyed. Not looking good.

In the end, I managed to evade them again and made for open water to lick my wounds and decide what to do. Press on south for the patrol grid, using the observation scope for attacks, or call off the mission and head for home?

Then I checked the fuel levels. 25%. Huh? I always make a point of travelling slowly to conserve fuel, so where did all that diesel go? Maybe a tank had been ruptured in the attack. No chance now of making it to the patrol grid in the south and back to Wilhelmshaven - I'd be lucky just to get back home.

So, despondent, I set off north and round the Shetlands again, alternating submerged and surface running to save precious fuel. I had a few nearby enemy merchant contacts, but didn't pursue them for the same reason.

Finally, crawled into Wilhelmshaven, docked, and handed out the single qualification I was allowed. No medals, no promotions. Hardly surprising for a 10+K ton patrol. Then I headed of to the shipyard to see what upgrades were available. They wouldn't let me in.

Why? At some stage, probably while I was busy under attack, I'd been ordered to return to Brest, and hadn't noticed the message. :damn:

If I'd known, I'd have been able to sail on from Loch Ewe to my patrol grid, complete the patrol and get to Brest with no problem. Also, I'd have been crossing my favourite hunting grounds west of the Channel.

So ... I nominate myself for Moron Of The Month. Hey-ho.

I happen to be at Sea just at the same time period you describe, and I am going to pay close attention on base changes! Your story is very useful. :yep:

Your award is waiting for you to be picked up in La Spezia.

If you saw the message and proceeded to forget, then I would say you get the Moron of the Month award. Since you didn't see the message, I don't see the need for you to get this prestigious award. :88)

Same here - I laughed aloud at the "La Spezia" suggestion.

An alternative would be to be assigned mine-laying or weather-reporting duties ... or maybe a transfer to a Type XIV resupply vessel for the remainder of the war. :o

Weather reporting sounds dull, but minelaying can be a hell of a dangerous job - depending on where Those Up Above want the mines.
And the ten Type XIV resupply vessels were all destroyed. On purpose, using the information from the broken German code.

I know exactly what caused all this. You guys are Brits and
playing a German U-Boat Captain in Britains hour of need
during WW2 is just going against the grain !!!

hakkikt:

Minelaying duties were hated by U-boat commanders - you didn't come back flying flags for known kills, you just sailed out, dropped your ordnance and, with luck, came back alive. A thankless task with no direct results - and probably more risk than if you'd sailed with a load of torpedoes.

FAdmiral:

It certainly does go against the grain, particularly when you're sailing close to your real home. I'd expect a New Yorker to have qualms about seeing the Statue of Liberty through the periscope too.

It took me quite a while to get used to the idea that I was pretending to be a U-boat commander fighting for the Nazis (I'm a very left-wing person), but once I'd adjusted to the idea that it was all just pixels on a screen, no morals involved, it became almost (but not quite) natural to sink British shipping. It's an interesting dilemma.

According to the DAS BOOT movie not all Uboat sailors were nazis

The first time I came upon a vessel flying an American flag, I just did a down scope, ordered hard port and quitely moved out of the area. I didn't have the heart to send her to Davie Jone's Locker. I have sence sunk several American ships, but the first one was really hard to do.

That's why I said "U-boat commander fighting for the Nazis" rather than "Nazi U-boat commander". There was little political feeling in the Kriegsmarine compared to the Luftwaffe, or even the land army, and the U-boat arm was even less political than the rest of the navy.

Hitler famously complained that he had "a reactionary army, a National Socialist air force and a Christian navy".
