Really basic question

Sorry if im stupid, but after ive completed mission objectives, ive shooted all my torpedoes and all that...
Do I have to return back to base manually,
or does "esc" return to base do the same job?
Im asking because ive completed several mission, but in
promote crew window reads missions complety 0!

might be a kind of bug here, but i am trying to get back to base avoiding the esc stuff ....

If you save your game and then choose to return to base rather than travel back manually, then all you lose is the small amount of renown associated with manually sailing back to base.

It's a bug that happened to me a couple of times, that's why I save before exiting the mission. Usually if I have this bug happen it goes back to normal after I reload my saved game.
However I always go back to the base and only exits the mission while I'm close to it (less than 30 km).
