Which ports are proving to be the best to sneak into for available targets?

If you have 1.4b installed, any enemy port should have a decent mix of merchants anchored up (and usually a destroyer or two as well).
Not sure if this is randomized or something for each patrol?

I have 2 careers going. One that is normal and the other where I just go into different ports.

Thanks, Nopileo. I've never given covert port entries much thought but I thought I'd try and sneak into one.

No problem. I think this is one of the best new features in the latest patch.
Getting those docked ships can be frustrating, though. I snook all the way into Bristol once, and found a T3 (or maybe it was a T2) moored into one of the quays we usually start from, so there was no way I could hit it from the side.
So first I fired two under it's keel. It went low and hit the bottom, but wasn't destroyed. And now I couldn't use magnetic torps on it anymore. So after that I spent a silly amount of torpedoes on it before I finally managed to get one to explode in it's bow section.
Scapa flow :know: I've never done it myself, but it would be interesting to see what's docked there in the SP campaign (outside of the single mission). I really haven't snuck into a port yet, but I guess it would be good torp practice since I'm good and sneaking and evading anyway.

On my current patrol i'm trying to sneak in to Scapa Flow, i have to take the western entrance now.
I personally ignore Scapa Flow as you will not find anything there.
Only one time in 1939 did I find a Battleship in port..Otherwise the port sits empty from my experience. All I find are partolling destroyers otherwise.
Hartlepool always has the same 4 ships in it ..a T2 Tanker,C2 Cargo ship and 2 smaller merchants.
In one test I snuck into New York harbor in 1942 in an IX class boat and found absolutely nothing in harbor. No destroyers except 2 patrolling outside the harbor.I was even able to surface and sit next to the Statue of Liberty for 3 days and 3 nights and not once did I get attacked by a destroyer or aircraft.
So after tests that I ran I make it a point to stay away from harbors cause even after the 1.4 patch they still are not worth the effort as most ports I have seen are still empty except for Hartlepool.

Starting in late '40 I believe a fat Fiji Cruiser (highest prize cruiser @ 430 renown) is anchored ~5000 meters Northwest of Loch Ewe Port...2 meter Impact aimed at rear main guns will do it!

The statue of librty is modeled in the game? :o Very nice! Any screenshots? I've never been across the 'pond' myself yet in SH3. Maybe I should try an IX boat soon.
Anyway, since patch 1.4b, all the enemy ports I've been to have had ships in them, and mostly the configuration you describe: a tanker, a larger mechant (sometimes anchored up some distance away from the harbour) and one or two small ones, plus one or two destroyers. But I've only visited British ports so far, in addition to Gibraltar.

By the way, the capital ships in Scapa Flow and Loch Ewe are there only on certain dates (historical?). For a listing on where and when to find them, have a look at the overview towards the bottom of the following page:

I snuck into Scapa Flow once at night, in the rain and heavy fog. Couldn't see worht a darn. Didn;t see any ships docked there, but I ended up having to make a U-boat U-turn as I was all the way into the end of the harbor.
As it turns out, it is not that easy to make a sharp turn in a U-boat in a small harbor. I ended up scraping along the walls once or twice, and had to constantly switch between forward and reverse until I finally got the boat pointed out of the harbor.
