First patrol after updating RUb to 1.43 I found a small task force. I've seen other small task forces consisting of merely 4 dd's but this one was special.
2nd day out of Bergen, We were heading NW to assigned patrol sector when on a routine hydrophone check I hear screws off the starboard bow, 2 familiar sounds (destroyers) and hmmmmmm what the heck is that? Haven't heard that sound yet. So I inform the kapitain "Herr Kaleun All Powerfull and Father to his country, Pegleg Jack!" (cuz thats how we're supposed to refer to him  ) "Kriegschiff!, 30deg to Stbd medium speed, moving away. 2 destroyers and 1 unknown.". He hisses, and with a growling kinda meow he orders we surface, ahead flank, licks his tail, and alters course 50deg to Stbd.
20km later and the lookouts spot the shadowy silhouette of something big against the dark horizon. After investigating the sighting Herr Kaleun struts up to me, hisses(he does that a lot), and swats me on the head with his good paw for not saying anything about the possible capital ship. I would've tried to explain to him that I wasn't familiar with those screw sounds yet but he woulda just swatted me again. We haven't encounted a warship larger than a Tribal class dd, whataya expect.
After getting a little closer we've matched the enemy's course and are off their Stbd beam. The large ship looked to be a bogue class escort carrier with 2 destroyer escorts, one ahead and one behind traveling in single file. After making some carefull plots on the map from the information passed down by the Watch Officer I calculated the speed to be 13knots. Herr Kaleun hissed again. Evin if the formation maintained course and speed getting into a decent position would take until mid-day tomorrow since our boat hasn't had it's diesels upgraded yet. The maintenance is scheduled to be done upon our return but that doesn't do us any good at the moment. Herr Kaleun orders us that we continue to match the enemies course at flank speed and notify him if anything changes, and that he would be in his bunk for a cat nap.
Not quite Mid-day yet, Herr Kaleun is a very calculating adversary, he has a passion for destruction that is legendary, at times I almost feel pity for the enemy. He's pacing on the computer desk...err CHART TABLE!! I meant chart table. Anyhow, he's pacing....he pauses....studies the plots on the chart....resumes pacing for a moment but stops to swat at a seaman passing by, then, seemingly inspired by the cries of the seaman he orders a course change to port....our attack run is commencing.
To be continued . . .
