How much damage does a torpedo inflict in terms of tonnage? After identifying the tonnage of a ship, is it possible to work out how many direct hits will do the job?

No, you can't do it that way. Different ships have different types and widths of armour, and it matters greatly if you shoot on the fore third of a C3 or the part that contains the fuel tanks. A C2 can take three hits or so if you don't place them well. If you do place them well, it should need only one.

There's no real correlation other than small and coastal merchants (and anything smaller than that) will sink with just 1 hit amidships.

The bigger ships...depends. I've had to fire 4 torpedoes for a 6500 ton C2 to sink, and I've seen 11000 ton T3s going down with just one. It's all in where do you hit them. Machinery spots usually are the best place to put a torpedo on. Each ship has a "sweet spot" that, if hit, will mean a sunk ship with just one torpedo.

Some clues:

C2s: aim just below the funnel. 3m depth impact pistol. Ship usually breaks in two with such an impact.

Troop Ship: aim just below the bridge. 3 or 4 m depth impact pistol. That usually spells doom for them, but sometimes they survive one such impact, tho, and you must send a second torpedo to finish the job.

Tankers (inbound convoys): hit them immediately before the bridge with similar settings as avobe. The ship usually will sink with a satisfying explosion.

Tankers (outbond convoys): Unless they're Small Tankers (aim for their bridge), don't waste your torpedoes on them if there are other targets nearby. They sail ballasted ,carry no flammable cargo, and they have an immense buoyancy. I've hit outbond tankers with three torpedoes and seen them sail on with little problem. I now leave them alone.

Destroyers/Cruisers: Aim just below the fore turrets: magazines are there and usually the fireworks a torpedo hitting there causes are better than 4th July's.

C3s and Large Cargo: (I play with RUB1.43): those two I've never found the "sweet spot" yet. I've managed to sunk C3s with single under-the-keel torpedoes detonating just below their machinery, but usually they take at least two eels to sink. Same goes for the Large Cargo ships, except that I haven't been able to sink any with just one torpedo. They always take at least two.

The rest of the ships-I've never found them so far so...no idea :D.

Large cargo can be sinked with one torpedo, aimed bellow the keel, and aproximately at the middle of the ship.

Most will go down with 1 torpedo, but has to placed just right.

Small tankers can take three deck-gun shots of AP on their mid, before they make a fireball.

I try not to waste too many torpedos since the VII 7 I have don't carry as many as the bigger subs .... I usually send one torpedo into any ship ( except the liners they get 2 ) and then wait and follow it and watch it take on water from my hit .. Most times the ship will sink after an hour or so ..... but not always , so then its another torpedo or deck gun time ..........

another way ti "kill" c3 t3 ships.

Launch at the propellers.

The explosion will dismantle the propeller (helice) and the ship will stay dead on the water.

Last tineHad 4 C3, 1 C2 and 2 T3 tankers. then waited under a dead boat the convoys to go away.

Then surface, and finish them with guns, hitting guns first ....

Duli, thanks for the tip. I was pointing the torpedos slightly aft to the large transports (to see if I could cause the stern to sink, and drag all the ship down under the sea). I'll try to fire torpedos just to the middle to see if I get the same results as you ;)

Usually hitting the machinery spaces will cause the ship to completely stop anyway, and with much stronger floods...

However the deck gun part is not available for RUB1.43 users...Deck gun takes forever to reload and it seems to do almost no damage at all. Just yesterday I had a C3 with the stern almost awash, spent 20 minutes firing (something like 20 rounds or so) manually ,hitting each time under the water, and I had to fire another torpedo because the damned ship refused to sink and I didn't want to spend more time on the zone...something nasty could show up and give me a bad time.

C2's and C3's can be sunk by aiming at the flag. another way to think of it is the first half (towards bow) of the space between the flag and the stack. put torp depth to 3 meters.

small merchants, and coastals, just aim amidships

tankers are the most evil things around. i put four torps into a t3 before it went down. t2's are also evil. what is the bridge on teh tankers, the structure in the middle or the structure in the rear? and what about keel shots?

troopships (i met only one), aim for stack.

I've had some luck with keel shots on T2, T3 tankers. One shot......to the bottom.

where would u aim it on the keel shots? for the middle structure? in between the middle and rear structure? just lock the view and fire?
