Using RUb 1.43 only.

Boat: Typ 7B, heading to BE31 passed Fair Isle through Shetland/Scapa Flow gap.

Date: 31.10.39 @ 12:40 GMT.
Posit: AM 7289
Course: 270, Speed: 0, Depth: 12m.

In front of large convoy heading north @ 6 knots. Lone DD patroling in front detects and sinks the Uboat. Thats strange for being so early in the war. Hmmm.

I decided to try this again, just for the learning experience...reloaded and proceeded to the exact spot only this time went to 50m depth. and was again detected and killed using the same Uboat parameters above.

...on the third try from the same location, only this time...

Uboat course 180, Speed 3, Depth 12m, Running silent.

It seems that if the Uboat is moving it is less detectable, as I was able to come within 200m of the DD and remain undetected at PD. An interesting lesson; but, dead is dead--so back to the beginning.

cheers,

To my thinking, if you're stationary, it provides them with something to examine for longer -- both because you're not trying to work yourself past them, and because any suspicions can be investigated. If you don't move, they can find you with passive sensors and move closer to confirm.

But...did you try Speed 0, but running silent? It has more to do with just the engines...

Last night I spent 4 hours trying to evade 2 DD's after expending my torps on a convoy. I was doing everything I could, finially got free.

I agree, but, before RUb I guess it was too easy and the learning curve is just beginning again.

Before RUb 1.43 you could lie in ambush and wait...now, you've got to work for the results. I like this a lot better as it throws a new demension into the mix.
