Aug 12: I have placed an updated WMV movie with corrected spelling and also uploaded a QUICK TIME version of the movie.
The QT version is better but a much larger file.

Hello All,
I have been a long time reader here and have gotten a lot of help with questions I had about Silent Hunter III.
Thank you all!

I read about people making movies using FRAPS so I thought I would give it a shot. Please be kind in your reviews. By that I mean, be honest not mean. I can take honesty. You will see inconstancies in the film and that is because I was working with a game. After over 130 hours I just got tired of restarting the game to get a specific shot so please bare with me on that. Oh and I already know that I'm not Robert Wise or Sidney Lumet courtesy of my friends.

Here is the link http://hosted.filefront.com/Smoker59er

I did learn alot from this project that I can use on my next one.

Once again thanks all for the great info about the game.

I loved it! Excellent job!

Did you do all the voices? And how did you get the other sound effects? Like the alarm on the sinking ship and the high-pitched pings?

How about putting in a sequence of a flying aircraft towards the end? With CCIP's great cameramod (I think it's his!) you can rasie the camera up to the cruising altitude of aircraft.

But I like it very much as it is.

If you're thinking of making more of these, I won't mind at all! :ping:

It was a pretty big download, but it was worth it...very nice movie!
Some of my favorite shots were of the torpedoes launching and steaming towards their target.
And, it was nice to hear the in-game music (which I really like) be used in a "cinematic" way, it works really well as a movie score.
It was also pretty cool how the crew seemed to be really talking, with their movements matching their speech.

Keep up the good work!

outstanding! Thanks for creating and posting it!
Two quibbles:
1) it's "crew morale", not "crew moral"
2) 2 torps at a small tanker is awfully profligate! worked out though, that tanker blew up real good! ;)

Smoker59er,

That was great work, when are you doing the full length movie version? :-j

Seriously I loved it and I could have watched more, I realise it must have taken you a while to edit all that and put it together, it is an outstanding job.

I like it. Sure, there are some "tech" issues... but the general idea is good. It gives me emotions, and that's a very good thing (I think). Thank you for the job, and let us know when you will release your second film!!!

Hello All,
Thank you all for your generous response I truly appreciate it! And (badger_ken) yes thank you for pointing out
it's"MORALE". too funny. I'll fix that in the movie file. The two torps were a directors choice. I wanted the long shot of the two torpedoes heading to the tanker. Technically you are right. Torpedoes are expensive!
To answer a few of the questions:

My fathers great, grand father came from Norway. My dad is 83.

I did do all the voices. It took a bunch of recordings and I still could have done better. My advise is to either direct someone else and let them do the voice work or BE directed by someone you trust.
When you are doing it yourself it's hard to be objective. P.S. have good microphone and Head phones.

Most of the shots I took were silent. After I edited them the way I wanted (got the time line down) I went into the SHIII sound file and pulled the sound I wanted and then put it where I wanted in the movie. As for different Pinging sounds, I simply manipulated the the sound file and raised the pitch. I did this with MAGIX MOVIE. Adding the sound effects took almost as long as filming.

When using FRAPS I always recorded using the "Half-size button. It just seemed to work better and it made the AVI file smaller. I also recorded at 30 FPS.

I used "MAGIX MOVIE" software to do all the editing. It was not too expensive (under$70 dollars US.) and came with a ton of options. I tried Premier but just didn't like it.

What I learned: Make your script first, Film your scenes, Record your dialogue then add the sound effects. It will save you some serious editing!

As far as the size goes; The original movie on my hard rive is about 3 gigs. I have a DVD version (It looks outstanding on the TV
and doesn't stutter) that is about 330 megs as an MPEG. I couldn't figure out how to load that so I made the WMV.
I guess there were compression issues and that is why there are a few stutter in the movie.

I'll have to check our CCIP's camera mod. But to tell the truth...trying to get planes to be where and when you want them would be a bit of work that I'm not sure I'm ready for.

One last thing. I notices the that the sound quality was very poor on the downloaded version of the move. That is too
bad because I worked hard on getting the sound effects into the film. If anyone has any suggestions about that I would be happy to hear them!

I hope that answers your questions. Please let me know if you have others.

Thank you again for your encouraging words!

Indeed that would be lots of work, but I didn't mean that. I simply thought it would be a nice touch to have a sequence of an aircraft flying anywhere at the point where you say that the sub got sunk by an airplane. Simply like a 'fade-out' effect. No attack run or bombing sequence or anything.

But reading your post here and realising all the work you put into this, I'll rather let you spend time on creating another masterpiece! :ping:

But movies like these are surely appreciated. It reminded me of when I was playing an old Amiga classic sci-fi game (Elite II). It came with a collection of small novels in the box, describing the life in the game 'universe', depicting the lives of chosen individuals. Every time I read those I wanted to play the game. Your movie has the same effect.

Okay the link worked! GREAT movie, thanks for making and sharing.
I'll hope this will be an seperate genre, making movies.

With Flightsims it's already becoming a seperate hobbie for showing off new products, showing scenario's, telling stories with help of FS. Perhaps there should be a seperate forum with all kinds of movies....Called the Subsim Video Forum..

What a great movie you've done. The only thing that have (wich is a small one), is that you should use the "num del" button. You can see the slide bar on the left side on the screen.

Anyways, great movie....
Please make more of those

Hi Nopileo,
I remember playing ELITE on my Commodor 128. I loved that game!

I thought about having a scene showing or just foretelling the death of the sub. I instead wanted to let the words tell the story and have the final scene be of the sub as they would like to be remebered. Also I thought it worked better with the song. She sings about someone waiting for you "Over the Hill" and the fact is that you'll never make back to see your girl and find content and rest. OR.......maybe I was just tring too hard :hmm:
