After initally installing SHIII (retail DVD), the official patches and RUB 1.42...I had a hard drive malfunction. I have now reinstalled SHIII (it did not ask for box #) and when I go to reinstall the "patches" it will not let me....but it did allow install (copy) RUB 1.43! One of the preliminary load screens used to tell me what version (ie RUB 1.42) was running ...now it says nothing (ie, blank, no version or RUB version indicated). Query: What am I running? Where am I in the grand sequence of patch/mod land?

Probably a few things going on here.

If you have any mods installed prior to patching it then it will not allow you to patch it at all. You need to uninstall, defrag, install off the CD, patch to 1.04B and then install the mods as you wish.

By way of interest what message did you get when you tried to apply the official patches. That might be a clue as to what is going on.

Keep us posted.

I know it may sound crazy, but have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling, to make sure a lot of the common crud is gone?

There is something in the software that must permanently imbed itself into the registry that holds your CD code, because I too had only to enter it once despite numerous reinstalls (bad mod somewhere, still haven't isolated it entirely)

Also make sure that your original install directories are GONE if possible before starting, or at least the default folders (like data and such) that mods would alter. In my experience, Silent Hunter will uninstall more than its original files on uninstall -- even files I copied into the main directory -- but it will often leave other folders it doesn't recognize (BACKUP and MODS, for me) alone.

After installing (reinstalling) the following msg appears AFTER I have completed reinstallation from original DVD and I have started SHIII and selected/accepted English and exited.
" This Program (DVD 1.4b patch) cannot update the installed version of SHIII US DVD v 1.0 to 1.3 because: C:\Program files\UBIsoft\Data\Menu\de help.txt: unknown version. I went into the program files themselves and sent the "de" files to RECYCLE BIN and retried. Same msg on next attempt....only ...."\en help.txt: unknown version. Have restored the "de files" back out of recycle. Same msg on next attempt to install patch.
I have not tried defraging. Going there next. Thanks for the help. Further help is needed however. Will post saga as it develops.

You are using the right patch, aren't you?

I have downloaded only the (specifically identified) US DVD patch from the UBICOM site...although I believe there was a "UK" in the site address link. This was the same site I originally downloaded the 1.4 patch from on initial installation prior to hard drive disk problem. And, since repair...this is the only program restore I have experienced problems with.Specifically...I did not download EMEA patch(s) or the non-retail/non DVD US version. :damn:
