I am now in my 12th. mission. Have seen and sunk 3 merchants in this time, one with torpedo, one by ramming! and one with my Ack Ack gun. I am loaded with decorations, but for what? 9 months has gone by and I am wondering when I will see a convoy or something worth sailing for. :(

You ever go to AM52? Thats where the majority of convoys are. Hang around there for at least a week and you shall surely encounter a convoy

You sunk a merchant with an anti aircraft gun ?

By Ack Ack he probably refers to the Acht komma Acht, 8.8cm cannon. Beautiful toy, that one. :D
I keep bumping into convoys, I can't understand how some don't! Hang around the northern and southern inlets to the Irish Sea - in particular the northern one is bountiful - and you should not be able to wait five days without seeing a convoy, or at least get a radio report of one!!

No, this sounds strange (but realistic!). I tend to bump into a convoy long before I reach my patrol area, and sometimes even more.
Since I usually spend all my fish on the first convoy, those later encounters are quite frustrating. I have to watch them go by.
During my last patrol on my way home I went straight under a British carrier with no fish left... (Oct 1944 North of Scapa flow) :damn:
Anyway, if you are assigned to patrol a grid far away from nowhere, just go somewhere between Ireland and England afterwards, and you'll see more convoys than you hoped for - even if you're using RUb.
As advised above...
Finish your 24-hr patrol in the designated zone,
then head on over to Grid AM52. Plot a random course
wandering around AM52 and the 8 grids to which it is
contiguous. You can set your time compression to
1024x for this. Keep an eye out for convoy reports,
obviously. But also watch your frame-rate-per-second
monitor (displayed by tapping Ctrl+F8) and if the FPS
rate suddenly drops to between 1 and 5 FPS, you've
got a convoy within 50km of your position. Submerge
to get a hydrophone reading and follow up.
Also, don't ever be in a rush to finish a patrol. I know
it's intriguing to learn what goodies you will get by
going to home port. But you will have a lot more fun
staying out in the convoy lane until either your torps
are expended or your "Range With Current Speed"
gets down to below 6000km. (In which case, go home.)
Good luck!

I use the FPS trick, too! However, that way it takes me forever to get the TC down... I have to learn to use backspace for pause! :shifty:

I kid you not, no fish left, frustrated, I chased him down, used the pop gun that type IID carries, suddenly there wer a couple of explosions then some fireworks and down she went. I didn't have an 88 as you know. :arrgh!:

Might be that an internal fire was raging inside, and it only needed some time or a very light push to get on with it.

I have never EVER met a convoy or a ship in my patrol area.
All convoys were found in AM52 - just about one for each patrol
I cant believe that you went 12 patrols like that

I have sunk ships in my patrol area before. Off the coast of Halifax is also a good place to meet up with convoys. After Jan 42.
