Hi all

Just got jumped by another swarm of Sunderlands, and once again they couldn't get out of each other's way to get to me...

First these two bumped...

LOL, swarm of Sunderlands. Im sure that really happened about 0.0 times during the entire battle of the Atlantic. This game had more reasonable air power in the out of the box condition (vs. 1.4b) didn't it?

Looking at the pics it appears they can dish out some serious depth charge hurt though. I've only seen Hurricanes so far in my carrer (early 41), but the formation ASW aircraft hunts is totally un-realistic.

Did you live or is your boat in the center of that devestation?

Hello,
apart from the planes colliding in midair i had a PBY (Catalina) in 1941 (ok there already WERE some PBYs) that dived to drop its bomb - can you imagine a Catalina diving like a "Stuka" and level off at 30 metres ? Looked weird to say at least.
And to have more than one plane patrolling is completely wrong. Usually ONE plane would patrol its grid, and only call in for reenforcement if the boat a) would not submerge after attack and b) if the plane would not have been able to destroy the boat alone. There were never two Sunderlands, Liberators or B17s, maybe two Hudsons or several smaller planes near an airbase. Even with complete air superiority at the end of the war the allies never had enough planes to make one patrol for a small grid with multiple planes. Maybe we could change that ?

Not entirely true. I've read numerous fates of boats on uboat.net, and quite a few read: " sunk by Coastal Command Liberator and USAAF Liberator, etc etc".
But even that is usually no more than two planes at once...

fact is coastal command never did aquire a lot of planes during the war. Most of the excerpts from these books i read are from single planes radioing DDs to the position last seen. Of course thats after the plane attacked. When two planes attack uboats the boats are usually trying to be boarded or are heavily damaged surfaced...

Knotical, I did survive. This was all taking place some distance from my sub's location.

It is pretty crazy to see this number of aircraft together. Maybe to make up for the plane's gnerally poor bombing skills the devs chose quantity over quality.

They enemy aircraft don't appear smart enough to lay bombs/depth charges along the target sub's last track. Instead they'll just hammer one spot on the ocean.

Having problems with 'a few' aircraft as well. This is in Sept. 1944 in the 'channel' between Ireland and England (had some fun with a convoy there). There are 8 aircraft in this pic, and there were a few more around as well:

Amazingly, none of them crashed though.

I can't remember if this was before or after installing RUb, but RUb should take of the high number of aircraft, right? So this is probably before.

Must be Sunderland mating season...those randy male Sundies are always puffing up and head bunting each other.

1.43?

I should hope it's before it. If it IS in 1.43 though... I'ma have to bring this one to Egan's attention :hmm:

Just checked another picture taken about the same time. It says 'Enemy unit destroyed', so RUb is not installed here.

phew :|\

I'd say the only real chances of seeing more than 1 or 2 planes at a time in 1.43 are if you're smack in the middle of the Irish Sea - and even then!...

(Sorry for hijacking the thread again, cathode)

I just finished my first patrol with RUb 1.43, and I didn't see a single aircraft. My patrol zone was AM68 (in the middle of the Irish sea I think? Not too familiar with the names of the oceans).

But, while I was cruising on the surface close to there, I got a 'Detecting radar signals'-message, and hit . immediately (yes, still playing with external cam). It was an aircraft. I went to periscope depth and waited, but no plane ever came over me.

So thanks to RUb and all it's participants (especially the improved late radar detector of Jungman's), the game has finally become playable even in late war (I'm in Oct. 1944).

The only thing I miss now is a radar detector and radar that will work on the snorkel of the XXI. :ping:
