Anyone run across escorts that just sink themself or aircraft that just fall out of the sky or crash into one another? I've run into this a couple times myself...

I've seen it before. I usually just think it was one of my guys (other sub) that sunk that ship or shot that plane down..........

I've seen at least 5 mid-air collisions of attacking planes. They all happened in '44 and there were usually at least a half dozen planes in attack runs.

The only boat i've seen go down without my firing a shot was a tug boat in very rought seas....bloop, bloop, bloop :P

I was attacking an Convoy when I saw that a DD or Corvette that was on the far right hand side just went under with out me firing any shots...that left a nice opening for me to attack on my second run ;)

I've had other ships by themselfs go down for no reason at all (leaving the symbol on the map) but I dont get any credit for sinking them.

I once saw 2 DDs (the only escort of a convoy) run into each other.
But they didn“t sink, they just got stuck there at 0kts.

Smartly i moved closer, put 1 impact torpedo into one of them. She exploded, taking down the other one with her... :yep: :yep:

But i only got credit for the 1 DD i hit  :hulk:

And it was on my first patrols, somehow the rest of the convoy disappeared while i was making my move to sink the escort... :88) :88)

I've seen planes ram each other quite a few times now, but better yet I've now seen twice enemy DD's open fire on each other and sink each other , must be German spies on board !

In really stormy seas, I was taking my boat into Gibralter (itself an utter failure, alas) in very stormy seas and three or four grey 'sunk ship' icons gradually placed themselves around. Nobody even knew I was there, to the best of my knowledge, the storm took 'em.

Not sure even why I got the grey icons, I never saw them to know what kinds of ships they were...only thing to know they were gone other than that was that they vanished off they hydrophone :)

Strange and similar; I was stalking a coastal merc in the North Sea during a really heavy squall when I lost contact completely. Submerged to get a sonar fix and he was gone... after surfacing the map showed a sunken ship icon. Not sure if another Uboat got him or the storm....?

Another time I was off the Hebbrides at night when I caught a virgin convoy by surprise but I only had one eel left at in No. 5. Snuck-in @ periscope depth and tried to line up a stern shot but when I went to God's Eye I saw half the convoy going all different directions! Mind you; they were not changing course but steaming all over the place in all directions.... couldn't get the shot off because I was in-line to get rammed in various direction... wierd happenings indeed!

Sometimes I happened to spot warships or merchants in open sea at 0 (zero) speed.
They do'nt react , nor attack u.
I could fire them and they sunk with whole usual graphic effects , but no score was earned, as they were ghosts.
I noticed this happening after playng a multiplayer session at ubicom and then going to normal solo play without restarting SH3, but not sure because it does'nt happen always.
Maybe a bug.

In other multiplayer games, if you lose your connection to the server it will often just keep you in the game with everyone else, but unmoving. In those games, kills and such are recorded on the server so you don't get credit for anything.

I don't know how it works for multiplayer SSH, I haven't tried it.

In standard SH3, smaller ships will take damage and sometimes sink in bad weather.

This is fixed in RUb 1.43, If I remember correctly (at least even the PT-boats are going strong in storms in RUb). There is also a fix there reducing the number of aircraft appearing simultaneously, thus also reducing the chance of mid-air crashes.

Isn't that a tad unrealistic? I mean ships do sometimes sink in bad weather, especially small ones.

Several times I have seen one destroyer shoot at me, miss and blow up another allied warship. At the time it was a relief as I was about to die, but it does seem to happen too often.

Sometimes yes, not everytime you run into them though.

And PT boats should be fairly seaworthy.

Indeed it is! The ocean floor is crowded with ships that have sunk in storms.

Then again, small ships would never be out in storms anyway, and by that I'm thinking of the little patrol boats. Small merchant could be 'trapped' in open sea of course, so that is the downside of the fix.

Anyway I'm glad this is fixed, as I sometimes found myself surrounded by 5-6 patrol boats that were all burning... And, sometimes, after spending an hour or so getting lined up for that perfect shot on a C3, it sinks! (even they sunk sometimes before the fix). So if I had to choose, I'd take the fix.

Most PT boats were excellent even in rough seas, as the Fairchild Ds that went from England to Norway may testify.
Fishing boats, however... aren't that good. :-j

Well they weren't very good in SH3 until the fix. So again, the fix seems to make it more accurate, if what you're saying is true. :ping:

i had a strange happening once, it happened when i created a custom mission, two V&W's moulded each other together to make a V&W battleship, pretty cool, needless to say it sank as they tried to turn but it looked good

I've made it into Gib in perfect weather and escaped to tell the tale after sinking a T3, a T2, some small merchant and a Docked Destroyer (using Rub 1.42).

All i did was hug the Spanish Coast to the NE of Gib, travelling as fast as possible at night and staying submerged during the day. I got within about 20km and approached at periscope depth with silent running on. I swung around, with the Rock to starboard, in very shallow waters. Navigated to the middle of the Bay, spotted the T3, slunk over to it and popped a few torps into it at <800m.

On the way back out i saw a few tempting ships in the dock itself which i sank. For fun i surfaced in one of the docks, promptly got bombed by a catalina, sank to 50m, made my repairs and crept out to the waiting welcome party which managed to miss me completely.

The final destroyer was docked, started pinging me (well i think it was him), but didn't move so it seemed a waste not to make use of my aft torp. :arrgh!:

I escaped, set course for La Spezia and the acclaim, medals, renown and nurses that awaited me.

And promptly got sunk by an aircraft near malta on my next patrol.

I've never seen what you're describing. I have seen some C2's and the odd T3 take on a list in heavy seas but i never waited to see if they'd have sunk on their own. Too sweet a target to pass up.

I do agree with you however about patrol boats and i'd extend that right up to coastal freighters, as not being suitable for ocean gales, although it seems to me that they should either come through it unscathed or sink. Certainly not catch fire and go on the attack! :D

planes making strafing runs and not pulling up :yep: ive seen these kamakazis in the last 2 or 3 patrols.

also, this is kinda funny but. in october of '39, i snuck into scappa flow. i hit a revenge BB. about 30 minutes later, there were at least ten "sinking" marks on the outside perimeter of the islands around scappa flow. i only met one destroyer coming out of Scappa Flow :D

Yup. After installing Rub's traffic mod I was leaving Willhemshaven and saw 2 Bf-109's fly over my deck real slow, fall into the water and then keep running in circles through the water on the surface while blowing up the whole time making quite a racket. Also seen Merchants run aground and breakup, and numerous crashed and sunk E-boats. (This is not with the latest 1.45b mind you, I just got this version and haven't tried it yet. )
