Was just under the shower and whistling a song.

Suddenly I realized it was the song of the SHIII Harbour Band.

I agree, it totally sucks... :)

But I´m 99.9% sure that Drebbel meant "Muß i' denn zum Städtele hinaus" and not our lousy anthem.

Deutchland uber alles (version 1933-1945) :nope:

There is no "Nazi Germany" version of the German anthem, the forbidden "Deutschland über alles" part is much older.

I'm researching a story about Erich Hartmann, the number one air ace in history, at work lately. I was JUST noticing yesterday that, without fail, every time I am reading about anything German I hear "Deutschland Uber Alles" in my head, plain as day.

Is there something wrong with me?

The melody is from the 18th century, the text from the middle of the 19th. The Nazis never changed the lyrics.

see, I'm a Formula1 fan, and anyone following that for the last 10 years would have heard the german anthem courtesy of Herr Schumacher pretty regularly. :rotfl:

I think you can change the music by saving a new file as "fanfare01.wav" or whatever. Might be interesting to see what people would choose.

Sorry, not quite true. The original tune was composed by Joseph Haydn in 1797. But it was then not the German, but the Austria-Hungarian national anthem ("Gott erhalt uns Franz den Kaiser" translated "may God sustain our emperor Franz"). It stayed so until 1918 when the Austrian-Hungarian empire came to an end.

Only after this the anthem was adapted by Germany and the lyrics changed to "Deutschland über alles".

Btw. the lyrics of the german version remain unchanged to this very day, there was nothing changed to it by the nazis. Only the third verse is illegal today as this particular verse describes the extension of the (former) german borders, including areas that belong to France and Poland today (hence the ban), but again these were the effective borders prior to ww2 and way older than the nazi movement.

Cheers
Dobby

the "deutschlandlied" has three strophes(?!?), and the now tainted, "nazi strophe" is the first one. the original meaning of "deutschland uber alles" is not refering to waging a war, and dwarfing all other people around us. it refered to a united germany, under one flag. the germany as we know it, was formed out of many regional smaller states, principalities and so on. this is the original aim of the appeal germany uber alles. kind of a germany first thing.

Yes, it became the German anthem after WW1, but von Fallersleben wrote the original text (three verses), including the "Deutschland über alles" part in 1841.

Only the third verse is illegal today

The first verse is illegal, the third verse is the official German anthem.

Yesterday morning as I was going through my routine (shower, brushing of the teeth, etc.) I was whistling/humming it vaguely, and then it hit me. I can completely identify with the maker of this thread.

I'd be kind of worried if my roommate heard me, but then I'm fairly certain he would not recognize the tune!

Same here and I always sing "Deutschland Deutschland uber alles..." along with the anthem for the podium ceremony

Mind you I've enjoyed humming the French album this season - makes a pleasant change :D

BTW, I think the in game version sounds terrible - I always remain below decks until they're out of earshot.

Yeah, I've downloaded a lot of available files from the download section here, and converted most of them to .ogg files.

Of course a lot of them get stuck in my head now...particularly some of the most nazi-ish. I should be very disturbed...

I think it's just because they are catchy tunes. They were meant to be -- they were propaganda.

I think Drebbel is playing RUb, so in stead of the German anthem (that any Formule 1 viewer will know by now) he must mean the 'Erzherzog-Albrecht-Marsch' that is also played in 'Das Boot' when they return in the harbour.

I must say, it's a catchy tune :-j (and less provocative then the German Anthem)

I've had a few of those Gramaphone songs get stuck in my head, this one for the last 3 weeks in fact:

Flieger, grüß mir die Sonne

That's a great song right there! Probably my favorite of all of them.

I also like these two a lot:

Kammeraden auf See
Der erste Seelord

Attention please:
There is no Nazi Germany variant AND no part of Deutschlandlied is forbidden.
Only the third part is played since 1951 as national anthem, but ALL parts were official anthem till 1991. Since then only the third.

I don't think this is hard-core at all. A true hard-core SHIII kaleun would stand under the shower just long enough to get wet, turn the water off, soap & lather, and then turn the water on long enough to wash the soap off. That, and no "hot water" cheating, either!

Dobby-the-House-Elf, Burning Bridges would be a good one to use. LOL

For some strange reason I hear that in my head all the time. OOOps, I just finished watching the movie. :rotfl: But I still like it better than the anthem now playing dockside. ;)
