View Full Version : Help! Save is screwy...

I just renewed my career and something odd happened. I was stationed out of Wilhelmshaven and when I left, a screen popped up that said something like, "Reassigned to new port, Brest."

I thought, "Okay, that's new." However, when the mission started, the mission objective still said that I was departing from Willhelmshaven and to return to Wilhelmshaven. I played for a bit, took out a destroyer that was among 3 I was surrounded by just south of the tightest part of the Channel (my first time there). It took 3 torpedos but he went down and my entire time there I sat dead still in shallow water.

Anyway, I then saved the game and returned later. When I got back the mission changed to saying that I had a "Null" assignment and to leave Wilhelmshaven and return to Brest.

The problem is that Brest doesn't yet appear on the map to return to it!

Second, no matter what I do, my crew will no longer repair any damage or replenish the torpedos. I'm cruising along in rough waters (no deck gun) with planes everywhere (no flak in rough waters either) and red torpedo tubes staring at me with ships everywhere.

BTW, one last item. It's still very early. 10th patrol. 1940. I have yet to see any of the larger ships in the book. The biggest I've seen is a C3 Cargo ship. Where are the tankers and passenger liners, etc?

I wouldn´t worry about it too much, simply end the patrol and see where it takes you.

Are you running silent?

Check out the major convoy routes, AM for example...

Agrajag,

I have never seen what you have described about ports not showing up.

For 1st flotilla, Wilhelmshaven is available to about July-1940, and Brest should become active in August-1940. Even if Brest doesn't show up at the end you your patrol, I'd still head to the Brest area (see pic below, it's a bit east of grid BF-28 and BF-52) and 'end patrol, dock at Brest'.

If you can't 'dock' there, just 'end patrol' and things should be docked at Brest for the next patrol.

The 'Null' patrol area is a game bug. Pressing the F8 key should still display your patrol-area, but I don't think a player gets renown-points for patrolling a Null area for 24 hours. The Null bug usually shows up about 1 or 2 times per campaign.

For fixing your sub and loading torpedoes, make sure 'silent-running' is not engaged. Press the Z-key to 'secure from silent running'. Then repairs and torpedoes should work if you have repair and torpedo areas manned.

You will see bigger merchant ships as the campaign progresses. Especially late 1941 and onwards.

When Brest didn't show in my campaign I just sailed back to Wilhelmshaven and next patrol I started in Brest :D

Sounds like a good amount to check.

I have no idea what the impact is of ending a patrol while out in the middle of the ocean. What's the deal with that?

Lastly, the patrol area is right next to Brest so I'll certainly try that first and if that fails, head back to Williamshaven or exit.

Well, so far most everything is better. I hit the Z key and the command was to run silent suggesting I wasn't before. I then hit the key again securing from silent and that seemed to do it.

The port thing is still screwy but I'll deal with that.

Right now I'm going insane trying to outrun a torpedo boat that keeps showing up no matter how far away I move or wait and it's keeping me from going after a C3 cargo ship that is slowly outpacing me while I'm having to stay submerged. Damned rough seas!

You will not get 100 renown points when you don't come back to port.

This is a known bug "Base changed to Brest but does not show up on map yet".

Look at the nice map someone posted sail up that channel and exit patrol you should be close enought to get your renown.

As far as crew refusing to repair ... most likely rigged for silent running.

Yes I know your on the surface trudging along at flank... but the silent running button is probably still checked. Un check that and get to work sailor !

Just for the sake of closure, I went to Brest at the end and parked the boat right in the dock and exited. I wasn't sure if I got the renown but I don't think I did as the option to "Dock at [portname]" didn't appear. I just had a single choice to exit the mission. No biggie as I managed to sink 7 ships on that patrol (a new record for me) so 100 points wasn't really missed. <grin>
