Is there anywhere I can check my own course?

Check one of the many compasses, or zoom in on the navigation map.

I find the one in the lower window to small. In the nav map I have to drag and estimate my own course. Im looking for either a large compass og a presise readout of my course.

Ah, ok, I see.

I find the in-game compasses good enough. No need for me to know my course 100% excact.

But you could always click the compass aat the course you are doing at the moment and listen to the voice report.

Use the setkey utility in 'commands_en'. Allocate a keystroke to the following command:

[Cmd180]
Name=Set_course

I use 'v' as I don't use the event camera. Every time you hit the key your officer will call out your precise course...

Hey, look at me - I'm a commander now. You lot had better start calling me 'sir' or there will be hell to pay...

Yes Sir but look what happens when you get your next avatar :rotfl:

I just passed Commander. :damn:

Edit: Oops, Neal changed it.

Sorry, forget what I said.

I set my UZO or periscope to 0 degrees, then press '+' to Set Heading to View. It'll tell you your new heading, which will be the same as your old. It's a hack, but it works.

Hello!
Here is a mod I've done. You will have at least have a big and clear compass. Adding these voice commands menaged above will perhaps give what you want. :up:

Almost certainly because you still have 'v' allocated to the event camera in the file - try another keystroke. I believe that set keys 1.3 is more advanced, including giving you lists of commands, but I have not tried it.

I cut the "key" line from focus on event cam and pasted it under set course. is this wrong?

No, that's how I did it. If you like I'll pm you my own keyboard file, but there are several other changes, I don't know if I can remember them all:

0 = conning tower view

v = course

> = free camera (instead of shift + F2, as I play 100% and don't need a 'next object' key)

' = return to previous view (e.g. pressing this when in the attack scope puts you back in the conning tower)

# = rudder amidships

\ = helmsman view - gives you close up of the guages

I think that's it. English keyboard.

Let me know if you want it.

Can you please explain how to use setkey to get an officer to call out the subs course? There is no command called "Name=Set_course". How do I create one? Thanks! Joe S

You can get a good idea at night by checking with the star dome.... I was into astronimy years ago..... I had a schmidt Casagrain .... 10" system..... (correcting lense in front of tube... great for photography and when live in condo on beach.... great for cheap thrils and laughs ....) Anyway.....

Look for north star... look for Constellations.....Caseopia..... Orion rises in the east.... .etc.

If u have camara view on... it is also useful to watch a convoy moveat night in clear skies.... and if u recognize the constellations they are heading to..... gee...u get the convoys direction..... great sim.... also... naturally u can estimate this by hydrophone timed listenting and estimated ranges...... u get a great feel for direction and range of target vessel....

I look forward to Jungman's, CCIP and several others RUB mod..... jit will make this a totall new sim.... addiction is not good....

Joe S, I beg to differ. Open 'commands_en.cfg' in notepad, and you will find the following command:

[Cmd180]
Name=Set_course
Ctxt=1,2

I can't get the setkeys utility to run on my machine, so I use timetraveller's key checker, which gives you the code for any key you press. You can copy to clipboard and paste into the 'commands' file. As I mentioned further up this thread, I don't use the event camera (I have it disabled in the game), so the 'v' key is free on my kb.

So in my 'commands' file the code now reads:

[Cmd180]
Name=Set_course
Ctxt=1,2
Key0=0x56,C,"V"

When you are in the game, hit the 'v' key anytime and your Nav will call out your current course (you also get it in text in the toolbar).

Hope this helps.

Thanks Clive! I tried your suggestion,l opened the command file with notepad and changed the set course command just like you posted, but for some reason it still doesnt work. I get no voice message or text message. Any ideas what might have gone wrong? Thanks! Joe S

I just notice that in Setkeys, the set course command shows the following : (crew) "V". What does "Crew" mean? Joe

If 'v' isn't working, then the event camera keystroke is still active. Semi-colon (or delete) the event camera key entries in the commands_en file. At least if you semi-colon them out, you can always restore the key later without messing about.

Hi Clive,

This is how my set course command appears :
[Cmd180]
Name=Set_course
Ctxt=1,2
Key0=0x56,C,"V"

I checked the event cam and no key is specified. When I hit the "V" key in a mission nothing happens. Any ideas? Thanks,Joe

Help, cnanot set course with compass!

I tried the amendment to the commands en.cfg file, and now I am unable to set my course by clicking on the compass, which is a real pain in the butt. Can anyone tell me what the fix is? I opened the commands en.cfg file and the set course entry reads Ctxt=1,2 Any ideas? Thanks! Joe S

Help, cnanot set course with compass!

My first stupid question today: Which compass did you use ?

Joe S

I used the compass on the little menu bar at the bottom of the screen, lower right. Joe S

I have had the same issue as Joe S.
That and my set key program effort really messed me up ( :damn: re-intall :damn: ).

I'll be leaving the MODs to the pros.

That being said, I think that being able to click on the compass (in the quick control) to know exact course is a capital idea.

Has anyone noticed how varied the SH3 experience is? Search these forums and you find people who have real problems that you never see. I'm sorry gentlemen, but I have had no problems at all implementing keystrokes for almost anything:

'v' the nav calls out the course (and yes, I can still click on the compass for a new course)

'/' for the watch officer to call out any current sightings.

'\' to access dials (engineering station)

'>' gives me the roving camera.

'<' and the nav gives me depth below keel.

No problems at all with any of this, and nothing else in game is affected.

Other examples: Disappearing officers? - never happened to me - don't know what they are talking about.

uber DDs? - they seem about right to me - I can escape them if I use the right tactics.

Torpedo loading problems? - not here.

Sometimes I feel I am playing a different game to everyone else...
