View Full Version : Using Convoy's Sound to Mask

Hi all,
I keep seeing people recommending the use of hiding in convoys, based on using their "sound".
Is this truly modeled in the game and what proof do you have?
...or is it just the AI having trouble moving around and getting over you while you try to escape? (distance and probability).

Well I've mostly read topics that this is not modeled. Not sure if I have benefited from this myself. The DDs don't seem to hear me anyway. Sometimes I even go at high speeds just to get some action... :P

I have no idea if it is modeled into the game, it's my opinion the latter is the case though, as that is why I hide under convoys...I've never had a DD start dropping charges near me while lurking under a nice tubby C3...and they sure have troubles coming after you if there's a lot of traffic in their way.
That doesn't mean getting depth charged while under a convoy can't or doesn't happen though, just has never happened to me, maybe others have more info?

Sounds strange to me. If I'm not careful I will be "detedted" :(

I've tried to use this to my advantage with mixed results. Usually the only thing that helps me is a merchant blocking the path of an escort. Recently, I hit a passenger liner with one torpedo and it went dead in the water. I managed to get it between me and an escort and the escort hedgehogged both me and the liner, sinking it and damaging my boat so go figure. I haven't had much success with staying right under a merchant for very long but it seems like it would be helpful to some extent.

I don't believe it's modeled in the game with their simplistic sonar and hydrophone model.
The only benefit is the escorts will be so busy trying to avoid ships in the convoy they may not have a chance to maintain acquisition of your position due to collision avoidance.
That's about it.

I love trying to loose DD's etc in a convoy. I like cruising under one ship, then pop up to periscope depth on the other side and shhot away, leaving the attacker trying to get around the ship.
Well, escorts would never drop depth charges in close proximity of their convoy cargoes, would they?... asking too much from AI maybe..
