My Type IX carreer just got ended today by something similar. In Jan of '40 sailing south of Portland with a IXB with one heavy flak and a light flak on the way to BE61 (convoy alley) when my watch team spotted two planes coming in. Usually, I would go to periscope depth and evade, but I decided to be gung-ho about it and fight them on top.

Well, things were going great, shot down the two planes, but then 4 more appeared; of which 3 more got shot down. I'm all smiling to myself now and thinking that I'm invincible when the 4th plane of the second set comes at me in it's attack run. My crew again shoots it down, but just as they got it, it released it's bomb right aft of my conning tower. The blast instantly kills my flak crew of three and causes major damage to my sub. But the coup de grace was that the plane lands in the water about 10m to starboard, bounces off the water to land right on my foredeck. The resulting explosion from that took out my sub instantly. :o
