I picked Run Silent, Run Deep, for reasons other than it's greatness. Sure, by todays standards, it's a bit old and tired. Wasn't really very accurate either. But, see, I've watched that movie a hundred times. (Probably more). Grew up with it, I did. I'm sure a lot of others feel the same way.
Hard not to associate all those years it gave me pleasure when I vote, you know?
So there's my vote. :)

Run silent, Run deep is a classic, and it was the first ww2 sub movie ive ever saw.
But you just cant bring out the realism like u can with dasboot, and i think thats my fav warmovie. Band of brothers runs a close second

IMO, U-571 is a farce of a movie, way too many things wrong with it. Sure its entertaining, but for me personally as a historian, its one jagged pill to swallow.

Das Boot.... but fav. sub movie of all time is by far Hunt for Red... "be carefull what you shoot at Ryan, some things dont react to well to bullets!"
"russian capt. dont take a dump without a plan son."
love that movie :arrgh!:

When it comes to uboats: It's definitely "Das Boot". I also quite liked "The Enemy Below.", but they built a very poor uboat interior in that movie.
When it comes to modern subs there's no way around "Hunt for Red October" for me
In addition I personally love "Operation Pettycoat" It's simply hilarious although it has little to no realistic aspect.
"We sunk a truck! Let's get the hell out of here!" :rotfl:
Das Boot is the best in my opinion.
u left out 2 movies
U-boat (In enemy hands)[2004]
and
LORELEI - Witch of the pacific [2005]
havent seen Lorelei yet, doubt it'll come here (Norway)..
anyways, until i see Lorelei, Das Boot is my favorite

I haven't seen the third alternative, so I voted Das Boot.
By the way, I recently ordered a copy of the original, full length version of Das Boot. That was awesome! I couldn't understand it lasted for almost 5 hours. It seemed like 2 hours tops!
So anyone not seen that version yet - go get it!

Here's my list, can't pick a favorite since I like something different about each one (Das Boot is my favorite U-boat movie though)
Das Boot
Operation Pacific (typical John Wayne movie, but I love it)
Operation Petticoat (hilarious, based on several actual events)
Run Silent, Run Deep
Destination Tokyo is pretty good, too.

You forgot to include Down Periscope in that list. :P :rotfl:
I actually have seen very few sub movies. I saw the one where the US DD harasses the u-boat (I for get the name - is it Run Silent, Run Deep?). I saw U-571 (quite stupid), The Incredible Mister Limpit (A classic - we need that "thrum" in SH3 :rotfl: ). Of course there is The Hunt For Red October. I liked it, but it was WAY different from the book. It seems the only thing the movie and book have in common is the title. :P

US DD harasses the u-boat
I think you're thinking of "The Enemy Below". Good movie, ubt I've seen it with two different endings.
I loved Hunt For Red October, I though they did a good job keeping the "feel" of the book while de-emphasizing much of the technical aspects; it resulted in a movie accessible to the average moviegoer...although the Russian they use in the movie is atrocious!
The special effects in U-571 were pretty good, especially the external shots. Being a later film, they had some effects that Das Boot either couldn't do or couldn't do as well.
If you utterly ignore the stupid plot, and the dialogue, and the characters, and just watch it for the special effects, it's quite a good film.
You have to ignore the German aircraft and German destroyer though, as they are complete bollocks as far as historical 'accuracy' goes. Just the S-boat and U-boat shots, I'm referring to. And the depth charge explosions.
Like in (stock) SHIII, the water in U-571 is too clear to be realistic, but it makes for impressive special effects!

Money well spent indeed! :ping: I got mine from www.playx.no for those living in Norway... (Btw I see it's not listed anymore. Sold out?)
What was strange was that the first DVD held the first 90 minutes of the movie, while DVD 2 held the remaining 3+ hours, AND the extras... :o Guess the second one is a double-sided or -layered or what terms they use... Still pretty amazing to fit about 4 hours of movie on one DVD.

Das Boot, hands down.
But, I must agree with Duncan regarding Run Silent Run Deep. That was "the" WWII sub movie until Das Boot and is still great even considering it being dated, movie wise.
However, when one thinks about it, that was a little cold war propaganda. It was meant to portray honorable German and American men fighting a fair fight and coming away friends in the then threat of the Evil Empire that sought to ally the German people to the cause of opposing communism
A little funny when one considers that was what many Europeans considered the bigger threat than Nazism.
One Frenchman told me he considered Hitler a temporary evil that would pass, but Soviet domination would destroy France forever
When asked in August 1939, who he feared more, the German or Russians, the President of Poland responded. “With the Germans we will lose our liberty, with the Russians we will lose our sou”l. Thankfully, they found it in the late 80s. Sorry, got OT there!!

Correct me if am wrong, but wasnt run silent run deep taknig place in the pacfic campaign against japanese shipping, how does that have to do with Cold war propgranda since you never even see any germans and they niether talk about the Altantic or Europe. ITs about fleet boats being lost in the bolgo (sorry not sure the correct speeling) straits, and a capt who lost his boat goes back there. Only to find that the deadly enemy is a Jap Sub not the first suspected destroyer.
Where are 'We Dive at Dawn' or 'The Enemy Below'?
Das Boot is not only the best Sub movie, it is one of the top three War movies ever made.
Both the other two were 'Kelly's Heroes' but you all knew that anyway.....Didn't you? ;)

being lost in the bolgo (sorry not sure the correct speeling) straits,
Bungo Straits you're talking about. I was confused about what he was talking about too.
Egan, I did mention "The Enemy Below"- I seem to remember it having two different endings. One where both the sub and the DD are destroyed as the captains salute one another, and a different one where the US capt helps the German capt evacuate his sub with a wounded sailor. Or am I completely insane?

U-571, that one isnt even worth being mentioned in that context, its a history revisionistic PO Hollywood junk..
Although I agee with you and do share the Hollywood PO junk view point, for that matter the community as a whole, I will say that U-571 does have a great beginning of the film, that is the DCing the u-boat takes. It's quite a thrill to jack the volume up on the surround sound and feel them coming. But after that first 5 minutes, it's no longer worth the time.

There's another old sub movie I haven't seen mentioned here. It's not too bad as I remember it, but it's been many years since I last saw it. Crash Dive, I believe, was it's name.
Anyone remember it? Just looked it up, starred Tyrone Powers, and won an Oscar. I know the Oscar don't count for must in realism, but it must be worth something for entertainment value. If you haven't seen it, look it up.

I wasn't aware there were two endings for this movie! I have a copy of the one where the wounded sailor is helped off the boat. Both vessels are destroyed when the U-boat's scuttling charges go off. Movie ends with both captains on the fantail of another US warship.
I would like to see this other version with an alternate ending.
That is a little closer to the real-life incident, where both DD and U-boat went to the bottom. Although in real life none of U-405's crew survived, and about half of the DD crew lived..

Two different endings? The one i've seen is the DD crew rescues the U-Boat crew and Robt. Mitchum rescues Curt Jurgens and his mortally wounded pal Heinie by throwing a rope from the DDs deck to the conning tower.
How does the other version end?

NEED MORE POWER SCOTTY! (Then Back from the engine room comes): Im giving her all shes got Kaptain, she wont take much more!
That scene does remind me though, wasn't their sneak thru the straights interupted by an A/C, kind of crappy weather to be flying in (esp. at night) IMO.
Anyway Das Boot wins for realism easily over all the others I have seen. I remember enjoying U-571 thouroughly untill the 2 subs engage each other in a underwater jousting match, at which point I lost it and started laughing out loud. Took me forever to explain to my friends why that scene would have nearly been impossible for WWII subs. The writer of that scene had probably seen Red October and Crimson Tide and was trying to follow suit. LOL

Yes, I had the same reaction to the similar sub-v-sub duel in 'In Enemy Hands', and likewise I was indignantly lecturing my long-suffering girlfriend about the implausibility of the scene. Of course I'd more or less given up hope for that movie much earlier on, when the US naval brass decided in their wisdom that with U-Boats menacing the eastern seaboard, the best way to counter the threat was to send out a submarine to sink the U-Boats.
I have a confession to make.. I haven't seen "Run Silent, Run Deep"

Das Boot. At least that's the only one I pull out and watch once a month.
The Enemy Below only has one ending. The two captains do rescue the German first mate, who dies anyway. Then they are picked up by another DD.
Sorry, but I don't consider Kelly's Heroes a great war movie, or even a great movie. Fun, yes, but hardly great.

I'm an American and I think that movie was pure garbage. Unfortunately, I have no control over what some jaded Hollywood moguls think the nation and the world wants to see. I'm sure to their way of thinking WW2 is some giant bad guy versus good guy comic book they can re-edit as they please to increase box office receipts. Frankly, I'm shocked they even bothered to put the disclaimer at the end of the movie giving proper credit to the British for first capturing Enigma.

Picking favorites is always difficult, Das Boot Director's cut to be sure but with only three choices... Can't argue with Run Silent, Rub Deep either. IMO U-571 should not be mentioned in the same list as these masterpieces without adding a warning prefix like "And now for a submarine film that Really Sucks..." or "This is a message move and the message is Avoid At All Costs".
An earlier poster mentioned Operation Petticoat starring Cary Grant and Tony Curtis. A good WW2 submarine flick and classic romantic comedy combined. Don't gag, the plot actually works surprisingly well. It shows up every now and then on TCM or AMC and is worth a look.

Finally, Das Boot..........its just Wlofgang Petersens masterpiece and to add to that I will say K-19 "The Widowmaker" directed by Catherine Bigelow who used the techniques of Pedersen in how shooting the movie. The moving camera concept is used here as well combined with extreme detail concerning the vessel.

Comparing between U-571 and Pearl Harbor, I rather to watch U-571 cuz it's a shorter and comical film.
Das Boot is my top favorite, and I have uncut DVD verison of it. I watched The Enemy Below couple weeks ago, I thought it was great and classic. I have yet seen Run Silent, Run Deep, but it is in my Netflix Quene, and plan on watching it soon.
