Not always. I've had several instances where I went to 20 meters and could clearly hear a target that my SO couldn't. Makes me wonder how many contacts I miss tooling along at 64x.

If you ask the sonar man to follow the nearest contact, what does he do other than just follow it? When would he report on it again?

Yes, he gives updates as your bearing position to the followed contact change.
