i am playing SH4 and for the last 2 patrols my last 2 saves will crash after loading and it pisses me off because it sets me 1 or 2 IRL hours back and im refusing replaying it again and again. is there a way on how to fix it or am i cooked ?

Not knowing specific conditions at the point of you saving, it's hard to say. Generally though, avoid saving when Submerged, Near Land or Near Other Vessels.

try rebooting which will clear up fragmented memory, which can cause all types of problems. if the saves are still corrupt, then that's that...you will need to start that mission over.

in addition to what Herr Trigger replied, there are many circumstances that could lead to corrupt save files. In no particular order:

are you using a large address utility, such as LAA? if not, think about implementing it. i believe it is still stored in the MODS forum.

are you alt-tabing to windows? it is strongly recommended that this not be done because it causes playing issues and THAT can lead to save file issues.

you don't list your mod-set. conflicting mods can cause unseen game issues which may not readily seen but can result in save file issues. are you using JSGME to manage your mods? if not, look for Jonesoft in the MODS forum.

i'm tired and it's been long day. if i think of any more reasons, i'll post them.

... old mod data still in the Save folder? When you change the mod load-out, you should delete the Save folder data, or make a new one with MultiSH4 applet.

So only when you're perfectly safe and don't need to save, lol.

SH4 is more forgiving than SH3, but depending on the mod set and configuration, might not be far off the mark. Save every so often, but do not over-write previous Saves. Get into a routine like "Dpt1042001" or something, then the next Save would be "Dpt1042002" or some such, something that you can remember. Get five Saves, go back and Delete 002 and 004, or some such paradigm. Don't erase the first, don't erase the last, and keep at least one in the middle, just-in-case.

Unfortunately it happens with every mod or even vanilla. Then you're ^%&&%$ seems to me. I end up deleting the last few saves in the documents folder to keep going.
