As usual, it's a cold winter day. It snowed a bit in the early morning hours. I sat with the cat and dog, Coffee mug in hand and watched it Snow. We had a discussion on world events and as usual, they didn't care. :03:
Cold, Snowy Days like these are what Subsim and Silent Hunter and other Simulations were made for. It's too cold to even think of taking the Motorcycle out. It would be a miserable ride in the cold anyhow. I have done a few motorcycle rides in the Winter out of necessity to ferry Bikes to their Winter storage areas and back. It wasn't fun.
Years ago, the Kids in the area and I would get together on a piece of property a friend's dad owned. We all helped build, create and maintain a Hockey Rink. It wasn't exactly regulation size but it was pretty big. We had a pond too. We would also play football in the fall on the adjoining property, also owned my my friend's dad. We would play Softball / Baseball on it in the Summers too.
The Hockey Rink had lights for playing at night. It also had a nice burn pit for warming up. We would be out playing so much and having fun, we didn't realize we were chilled to the bone. The Girls would come out and play too and learned how to skate and handle a Hockey Stick. The Girls could play tough too. We had younger kids we helped teach Sports and looked out for. They were the younger siblings of our friends.
The Girls and younger kids played Football and baseball / softball with us too. Looking back, it seems very Norman Rockwell-ish at how inclusive we were and how much fun we had. Those days helped me hone my skills and influenced my decision to play organized sports, like Hockey. They also showed me how Important it was to work as part of a Team and about Sportsmanship. Now I have the aches and pains from those times to show for it. I wouldn't change any of it, though. :)
Sometimes, the parents would come out and lace up skates to partake in our Winter fun. I know my friends and I won at least a few hundred Stanley Cups and Olympic Championships on that Ice. At times, It seemed like nothing less than the fate of the free world hung in the balance of our Hockey matches. If I wasn't doing that, I was practicing Guitar, Piano or something else. I sat this morning watching it snow and thinking about those days. Not surprisingly, it was with a huge smile on my face.
We are having some difficult and uncertain times, worldwide. I wondered what all of you did in the Winter months to entertain yourselves. Hopefully, you all had great times with your friends and siblings that you remember with nostalgia and fondness. Maybe those times helped make you the People that you are. I thought it might be fun to revisit those times.
