He and his wife were found dead beside their dog. Media did not say it, but due to the circumstances I assume they voluntarily left together (except the dog, maybe).

As an actor, he was very intense and very screen-present. Thats both two big compliments. And I did not even like most of the roles he played. But he was a master of his art.

Bon voyage, Sir.

I wouldn't assume murder/suicide like Skybird says. Given the fact that the dog died too it's far more likely this was a gas leak or carbon monoxide poisoning.

I assumed suicide, not murder, the police said so far nothing indicates murder.

They also said they all three laid close to each other/side by side. Not impossible that it was a gas leak, but due to this description I think a voluntary act is more likely. Just a subjecitve feeling.

Anyhow. If it was gas, they will soon enough reveal that. Its absolutely possible, of course.

Yes, it has taken a turn.

First reports I red this morning said the two bodies were found close to each other, and the dog with them, close to them. Police said no signs for a violent crime.

Now it is the bodies were found in two different rooms/places, one dog dead, and two more dogs survived and the police says it does not rule out anything anymore.

Back to square one.

Edit:

Family members have now expressed the same suspicion that August has: gas poisoning.

P.S. Dogs can NOT smell CO and CO2.

Yes a terrific film. Anything he was in earned immediate kudos - a guarantee of a good movie. Now, as usual, someone will come up with a list of turkeys - but I honestly can't think of any

I'm really sorry to hear of Gene Hackman, his wife and the loss of the dog. I liked Gene's movies including the French Connection, Crimson Tide, Behind Enemy lines, Hoosiers, No way out and the Firm with Tom Cruise and Unforgiven with Clint Eastwood. Gene hackman also played the role of the blind monk in the Mel Brooks comedy, Young Frankenstein.

Rest in Peace, Gene. Thanks for the great Cinema.

Well, Maybe he was a Blind Hermit who was once a Monk who was kicked out of the order for eating Rice Krispies that went snap, crackle and burp. :yep:

[FOCUS] Update February 28, 1:07 p.m.: The US people portal "TMZ" has published the emergency call that was made before Gene Hackman and his wife were found dead. According to US media, the caller is a tradesman or caretaker. The man reported "two or one dead person in the house."

Then the caller becomes clear: "Send someone very quickly. Please!" The man cries, and a "damn" can be heard several times. The emergency call operator asks for details about the "patients." The caller says: "Probably a woman and a man." He does not know whether the two are still breathing. "The house is locked. I can't get in," says the caller. "I see her lying on the floor from the window." He asked three times in total for someone to be sent quickly.

After the death of US actor and two-time Oscar winner Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa, the search for the cause of death continues. According to reports, the front door was open and not locked - contrary to the statements of the emergency caller, who spoke of a locked house.

Hackman's wife's body was lying in the bathroom next to a fan heater, with pills scattered on the floor. According to TMZ, Arakawa had apparently been dead for "some time". Hackman's body was lying fully clothed in another room.

According to a report in the "Express", the bodies were already partially mummified. The woman's hands and feet were said to have shown signs of decomposition, which was also the case with Hackman. A dog was also found dead in a kennel, and two other dogs were discovered alive. Details of the death mystery

A search warrant classifies the deaths as "suspicious" and justifies this with the need for a thorough investigation. "The deaths are suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation," the document states. According to the document, there were no signs of forced entry into the house. The fire department carried out tests to rule out possible carbon monoxide poisoning. No evidence of a gas leak was found. The New Mexico Gas Company also checked the gas lines in and around the house. According to NBC, the gas supplier was also unable to detect any problems.

The sheriff of Santa Fe County, Adan Mendoza, has not yet given a cause of death for the couple, who had been married since 1991. There are no obvious signs of a crime and no message from the couple was discovered, Sheriff Adan Mendoza told the New York Times. "At this point in the process, there is nothing that obvious. The autopsy will tell us more. We're not going to guess if it was an accident or natural causes. It wasn't typical." Hackman's daughter Elizabeth Jean previously told TMZ that the two may have suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning.

A police spokeswoman said officers were called to the scene at around 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday. A neighbor had called because he was concerned about Hackman and his wife.

Heard an update to the story:

Hackman's cause of death has been ruled as cardiovascular disease, with Alzheimer's disease as a significant contributory

Police say Arakawa died of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome - a disease carried by infected rodents

Authorities say Arakawa likely died several days before Hackman, and it's possible he was not fully aware because of his advanced Alzheimer'.

Alzheimer is a cruel grim reaper. For the affected as well as relatives and friends its absolutely cruel and devastating. One wouldn't wish that on anyone.
And the dog - starved to death...? Rather it died of thirst, I assume.

Hanta virus, they say. Its possible but unlikely that squirrels carry the hanta virus. Infection happend mostly from mice and rats, and here their poo, not so much direct bites and scratches.

I know all too well about Alzheimers. My wife and I cared for my mother in our home for the two years that it took to kill her. On the last night I kissed her goodbye and by morning she had passed on. I can still feel the striking coldness of her forehead on my hand when I went to check on her. Then I helped the funeral director straighten out her body, put her in the remains bag and carry her body out to the hearse. She barely weighed 70 pounds.

My heartfelt condolences, that must have been terrible, I lost my father-in-law to it at the ripe old age of 59 and it left me with memories I'll never forget.
