View Full Version : Do immobilized ships drift with wind, currents?
Hi, I was recently playing SHIII with Onealex 1.53. My last torpedo struck a freighter's stern and I could see with F12 view that it's propeller had fallen off. I waited several hours for the the weather to clear to wind below 7m/s and engaged with the deck gun. The immobilized ship had moved about 1500m.
In earlier versions of SHIII, I had the impression that any ship with it's propeller shot off would decelerate to zero speed and then remain perfectly stationary. Do recent mods simulate immobilized ships drifting with wind and current?

They do seem to coast very slowly for a very long ways after losing their props, however they do come to a stop, and in my experience that is where they stay as if anchored.

As Kpt Lehmann says there are no currents or windage effects in SH3 but ships can go a surprising distance with no prop.
However SH3 icebergs must all be British pykrete ships as they can get up to a couple of knots in some scenarios I've played.

During the original GWX construction roughly 20 years ago, we found an SH3 bug preventing the icebergs from ever moving. They would spawn all day long as visualized on the SH3 mission editor... but were totally without means of movement... and obviously wind is not properly modeled in SH3 to represent drift.
We gave them small 'engines' (invisible to players) that would push them about in their usual general real life pathways.
On side note, surprisingly when you sail without any waypoints (just heading a course), your U-Boat is affected by waves and slowly drifting …

Yes! For player U-boats it is a little different regarding drift, as Fifi states.
That being said, it is very very slow. It may take you 2-3 days to go a couple of kilometers even when the wind is up.
Interesting point about player U-boat drift. I had the impression that the immobilized target ship had drifted, not my U-boat, at least relative to the mark I had placed for the target in the F5 map view.
In the Onealex Mod, I can see the gyrocompass repeater oscillating slightly as my U-boat moves through rough weather, but I believe the "base course" is perfectly on track.

Was a interesting point to talk about :Kaleun_Salute:
I know the uboat can drift too. But has little impact.

That oscillation is present all the way back in stock original SH3 too.

I was hiding under immobilized BB (it got hit by torpedo with magnetic pistol) and iirc it didnt move, just those angry DDs were circling around because they couldnt attack me directly :D
BTW very nice place for torpedo reloading, because I have used all my torpedo tubes for ambush attack on TF (HMS Hood sunk, 2x BB immobilized) and I had to finish them.
