Greetings sailors,
Per introduction, Subsim has been my go-to source for information on our favourite simulation genre for yearsss although I have never been active enough in the forums to remember my old usernames... or even the e-mail addresses associated with them... x-D
Like many long time residents, my submarine gaming goes back to the days when "Aces of the Deep CD" was new - even revolutionary. Later, I always preferred that compact disc version of the original + expansion to Command Aces("") as CAOD seemed to simplify (make downright blocky) a lot of the original's more intricate 3D models for texturing. In addition, CAOD's center stage voice features were just not something I ever really utilized.
Later, I picked up Silent Hunter 1 CE after playing its demo (back when every CD-ROM came with a host of demos), and found it surprisingly immersive for a 2D sprite-based game. Not long after that came the arcade-like but very immersive 'Iron Wolves' ...probably my first foray into "online gaming" (unless you count C&C Red Alert played dial-up). In Iron Wolves, as on Subsim, I went through a number of different usernames... historically having a hard time keeping these straight! However, I have many a funny Iron Wolves tale should any veterans of the 'Red' and the 'Blue' be around.
With respect to 'games' versus 'simulations' I tend to be on the fence as, while I certainly want my entertainment experience to have an immersive, realistic feel, the cinematic experience is also important (being able to 'watch my character's story' ...never disabling the external cameras in SHIII/IV even while all other realism features are checked).
SHIII/IV are what bring me back as, out of the loop for a while, I've started to dabble in them again but am uncertain of the most stable software and mod combinations. Would there be any stability advantages, in combination with certain megamods, to buying the Steam versions? I've typically used a torrent version of SHIII (disclaimer: legitimately own two copies of the game) owing to the fact the torrent I use automatically installs the 1.4 patch and GWX Gold. SHIV I've typically run with TMO although I've heard that FOTRS is cinematically spectacular. I can just never seem to make it stable on any installation... many CTD (AMD/Win'11). Any benefits to buying the Steam version there as well?
Thanks for letting me reminisce... : )
Other titles I've periodically sailed:
Red Storm Rising [DOS]
NavyFIELD
Voyage Century Online
Uncharted Waters
Cold Waters
