1. Hopfield is a theoretical physicist.

2. He created his network using physics-based Dynamical Models
3. To test his model, he constructed an analogue electrical network.
4. Hinton created a new version of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) building on the Hopfield model.

5. These ANNs are used in astrophysics and astronomy and have become the standard analytic tool used
6. It is very difficult to conduct particle physics studies without using ANNs

7. Hopfield and Hinton created a significant improvement that can be applied across several ANNs

She disputes that these key competences of these two guys indeed are traditional "physics". And I agree. Its more AI programming and mathemtics and should be given an award for IT technologies, maybe, or maths: I cannot judge that.

Note that something similiar seems to have happend in chemistry as well, two of the the three laurets are working at Apha and are busy with AI modeling. Chemistry...?

To me it looks as if AI tech and industry is being polished and ugraded in prestige and renomme here, to make it more prestigous and acceptable to investors - and to gain power and influence for Alpha, Google et. al. But that is my subjective impression, I feel not competent to indeed discuss this competently in depth.

However, I know Hossenfelders views and rantings and especially her anger about strong theory, and that is something I followed for twenty + years myself and I have a basic understanding of her criticsm and tend to share her view of it being bollocks, and not a "theory". Its just the all-dominating paradigm that makes money changing hands in Big Academia, that is the problem here.

Hossenfelder is deeply frustrated about such things, they have frustrated her physicist career to ruins. I agree with her, as far as my little understanding of these complicated theoretical models allows. Thats why I tend to agree with her on this story now, too.


Siocne in egnerla are in a terribly shape. And are deeply corrupted anyway. See my rants in the health thread on how they have turned diets against people - for profit. Fake scientific research done to "prove" these is what 95% and more of all new literature on diet is about. Not truth, or biochemistry. But selling and maximising profits from sales. All opposing views get suppressed, assassinated.
