Saving and ending missions the right way???

A warm hi to all. First of all i have to apologize because most probably these questions have been asked/answered before at some point.

Truth is i did try to search for the answers but the amount of information on these topics is overwhelming and a bit contradicting at times so i thought of asking here hoping that someone can bear with me.

So i did install SH3 with the GWX Onealex mod and also did the entire process of saving in the middle of sea, on the first patrol, changing the career cfg file etc.

So i am currently on my first patrol, about 50km from port all alone and my first question is.

Do i always have to save like this while in the middle of a patrol?

Meaning map view, away from anything, no TC, on the surface, no gramophone etc?

And my second question is

How do you correctly finish a mission and return to port?

This is really confusing. Do you hit ESC and then Exit Patrol? Do you have to return to port? If yes, all the way back to dock or close enough? And do you also save the game as well in this case so when you restart you are back to base?

no, you dont have to do it, BUT you would risk corrupted savegame when saving near ships, ports, etc.


If you really need to break these rules and save eg. near ships than it is good to have some safe savegame before that event so you can return to it if needed.

yep, using Esc and Exit patrol (faster way).
Or you can travel back to your base and end patrol there.
