Ahoy gents,
after 3 days I finally got a supermod working on the Steam version! Currently running SteamOS(Linux) on a steamdeck. The mod is One Alex.
It appears everything is working except I have a pretty annoying graphical glitch where a reflection of the underside of the u-boat is superimposed on top of the water. Attached is some photos.
I couldn't find any links showing a similar issue, was wondering if anybody here might be a Linux wizard and could point me in the right direction for getting it fixed.

Yes, water reflections are bugged with some graphics cards (NVidia if I remember correctly). I don't think it's related to Linux.
I have Nvidia card and never saw what you are experiencing in any megamod :yep:
I don’t think it’s Nvidia related.

Silent Hunter III vanilla does its graphics via the legacy directX9. This is still supported by Windows and Nvidia, but I guess it's more likely to have some glitches with driver updates as time goes on. If running Windows try an update or a roll-back, and check the Nvidia site for recent problem reports. They are usually very quick fixing any problems they may have introduced.
However, when running linux, Wine (or Proton if you are getting all Steamed up) converts directX calls to OpenGL, or the "son of GL" Vulkan, depending on how Wine is configured. I have found a few cosmetic differences between OpenGL and Vulkan when running Nvidia hardware.
At the next layer down Linux has two sets of Nvidia drivers - the default open source Nouveau drivers installed as part of the Mesa graphics software or the much faster proprietary Nvidia drivers. There are a few graphical differences between these drivers as well.
I have found OpenGL on Nouveau is very well behaved, but also sloooow.
So that gives you at least four different combinations to mess about with!

I remember a discussion on this forum about that problem. You may find it with the SEARCH function. I'm not sure at all that this was NVidia, but I'm sure it was related to a certain video card or chipset. It may have been Intel instead...
I've checked my specs (my water reflections are broken too, but not like sjfosella):
Intel Mobile 4 Series Integrated Graphics
driver: i915 v: kernel bus ID: 00:02.0
Also, it may be related to the driver's version.

Hey guys, I think the problem was the running the game with the latest version of Proton, I rolled back to Proton 8 and the problem went away. There were other weird glitches too like the hanging food shaking around violently.
If there is any Linux/Steam Deck users out there, the best way to run this game is by creating a windows xp environment using a program called Bottles, and installing the game on the virtual C drive there. Trying to get a modded version of the game running through steam is a real PITA with constant crashes and graphical glitches.
The game now launches flawlessly through SH3 commander and everything. If anybody needs help in the future PM me and I can send you my settings.
