View Full Version : Map scale compared to real world?

I always understood it that the world map in SH 5 was a 1:1 scale to the real world that is represented in the game. I just tested it out and found something interesting. I measured the Isle of Wight in game to be 61 KM long from furthest tip to furthest tip. A check on google earths measuring tool shows the same measurment to be 37 KM :hmmm: It's actually BIGGER in the game than in real life. Also measured approx sailing distance from Danzig (Gdansk) Bay to Kiel to be almost TWICE the distance in game as is in real life. Any thoughts on this?

The SH5 world is flat, which means while E-W distances at the equator are correct, at higher/lower latitudes things are further away than they should be.

Ah the mercator projection. Makes sense now, interesting. Wonder why they didnt just incorporate a curve into the map, would have made for a lot better horizon simulation.

Much more complex programming, and not enough time or money to do it in. Instead, they use algorithms to simulate the actual distances and fuel spent. Doesn't work the greatest, but that's what you get when you have a toilet paper tube for a world map, and a squished dome for the sky... lol
