So first post so sorry if this is the ring way to go about this but I inherited SH4 from my great uncle when he passed. Downloaded it from the “I think” original CDrom release, was able to get it to work on win10 without any patch updates. I can install all the updates up to v1.3 but when I try to install v1.4 I get hit with blocked by admin even after trying to run it as admin. Doing further digging with the properties option I found the publisher liscense and it says the publisher revoked the license or something similar. I downloaded the update from the official ubisoft website so I’m very confused on why the license is basically missing. Anyone have a good download link for it or know if I’m doing something wrong?

have you got steam? I have both and both works on win 11. Any messages about licence - forget it.

Where'd you get 1.4?
I'd just pop for a Gold version with U-Boot Missions for about $10 bucks.
That takes you to version 1.5

Try installing Sh4 into a different directory instead of the default. But I wouldn't even bother with 1.4 Most of the best mods are made for 1.5 Steam has Wolves of the pacific for $10 and the add on Uboat missions (1.5) is another $10. Also don't put them in the default folder either.

After you install the disk, you can go directly to the v1.4 patch, which is also on the SubSim site here:

Official v1.4 patch (https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=8)

You do need to run that exe from within the game folder, and it is best if you use File Manager, opened to the game folder, right-click the patch executable file, and choose "Run as administrator" from the context menu - even if you are running on an administrator privileged account. All old saves are not compatible, so it is best to delete the Save folder (C:\Users \UserName \Documents \SH4) prior to applying the patch.

If you have the Steam version of the game, you cannot use the v1.4 patch on it, but instead have to purchase and download the Steam "U-Boat Missions Add-On" version of the game. The US Ubisoft store usually has the Gold Edition (v1.5) of the game for the same price as one of Steam's versions. Both Steam and Ubisoft will run specials on their games, and you might find them for as low as $3 US at times...

Thanks for the replies I was expecting an email saying there were replies but never got it so sorry for being late with mine. I wasn’t really planning on spending money on a game I got for free just wanted to have any of the base game bugs fixed with the patches. It’s entirely playable on v1.2 but and updates I install are blocked by the publisher (Ubisoft) as the license is expired or revoked. Doesn’t work with any updates either from this site or from the official Ubisoft site. I have some experience running older games on newer laptops/PC so everything was taken out of the default download section and had its own root created. Steam is incompatible with the laptop I have sh4 on so that’s a no go. I’ve only played one mission on it so far and it seems fine other than mini subs freaking out when hit with a torp and rolling a mile away. I’m just extremely confused with how the license for the updates is expired/revoked but the game it’s self isn’t. I ran all the updates from the exe and it will install them but once I go to play it the license message pops up

I have had the disk ver since 2007 (or earlier) and never ever had to put a licence in, nor has it ever asked me for one. The box has a code sticky labelled inside which reads SH4-4X5Y-B161-W9AN-UUU0. I have never used it

Years later I bought the steam version and still I have never had to use any licence or code.

During all this time, any updates have never been blocked and I can obtain mods via Subsim
