Type IX cut down hull question.

I recently ordered the big revell IXC/40 and it has that odd cut away outer hull on the bow the Germans did late in the war. Does anyone know the name for that? I could also post pictures once I get the kit.

Which, with the skies full of aircraft made a critical difference.
