View Full Version : SH4 with FOTRSU 1.8 menu text shows up as yellow blocks.

Good evening folks, I recently decided to try SH4 again. I reinstalled it from steam (SH4+Uboat missions of course) and downloaded FOTRSU v1.8. I followed the directions, cleared my save folder, and ran LAA on sh4.exe. It starts up with the opening animation followed by the FOTRSU loading screen. But once it gets to the menu, the text is displayed as yellow blocks. I can still click on it, and could probably play the game if I looked at a picture of what the menu is supposed to look like, but I'd rather just fix it if possible. Has anyone else seen this before? I searched through the forums but I couldn't find any threads on it.

Must - have - more - data... any error messages when starting the game? Where do you have Steam and the SH4 game (Steam Library) installed? If you are using the default C:\Program Files (x86) \Steam... etc folder, then that is problem number 1. Refer to Moving a Steam Installation and Games (https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/4BD4-4528-6B2E-8327) for more information. It can be quite painful dealing with, and gets worse and of longer duration to deal with the more Steam games you have. SH4 and JSGME were written to the Windows XP paradigm, and as such do not understand the 'modern' Windows way of dealing with "unauthorized" applications. Secondly, did the LAA activate properly on the SH4.exe? You will not get any error messages if it fails. You have to open LAA again to see whether the tick mark "took". You might check and make certain that the SH4.exe and FileManager.dll files in the game folder are both write-enabled by clearing the tick box for "Read-only" on the Properties dialog's General tab. You also do not mentioin if you set the Compatibility settings on the SH4.exe Properties dialog. You might need to set the game to run in Windows 7 compatibility mode, disable full screen optimizations, and set the high DPI settings to override for the application. There are quite a few other places you might have issues. Look in the Support folder for the pdf files for more, detailed information, or post back with more info on your install. :salute:

Startup goes fine with no error messages. I don't have SH4 in a program files folder, I have it in a steam library folder on an external hard drive (laptop struggles lol). LAA said that it worked successfully but I will double check and report back.

Thanks for the reply :salute:

PS: I made sure LAA had worked successfully, then I went in to the properties for sh4.exe and made sure it was in Windows 7 compatibility mode, not read only, and set the high DPI settings as you suggested, and made sure filemanager.dll wasn't read only either, and the problem is still there when I start up. I will have to look in the support documents to see if there is anything else I could try. Is it possible that having it in the steam library folder is causing issues?

Review your SH4.exe Properties settings for Win10 / 11, as in Post #216 (https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?p=2783860#post2783860) in the Windows 10 thread. You might have to try multiple combinations, depending upon your computer hardware. Also, the USB drive should be as fast as you can get, with good throughput. Make certain you are using a good port. While IRQ lines are not at important as they used to be, a change in port might put you on a USB port that has fewer "contention" problems with the rest of the computer.
