How does the bear know that by increasing A it can pass through a thin slab of ice without breaking it?

This is what I would guess as well. There were a lot of soggy polar bears on the way to making this discovery.

Do cell singles have autonomy, cognitive awareness or are they just a preprogrammed glob?

I guess a single (prison) cell can also change one's mind :hmmm:
Here's a story about the fact that cat or other animal can think constructive.
My cat is born in Aug. 2011 the first ten month she wasn't allowed to come out due to her age and size. The year after around May/June I let her out for the first time.
I opened the front door went outside and called her name..she approach the front door and started to smell the surroundings around the door. It toke a few minutes for her to come outside.
What I knew but didn't take notice of was that in a tree growing on the backside of the garages, there was a bird nest.
My cat heard the voice from the little newborn birds.
Now I'm going to tell you in detail what she did this half grown kitty did.
She looked up. Then she toke a look at the surrounding first she looked at the roof on this garages, then on the fence and the box....before I knew it she was on the roof and was about to take a jump upon the three.
Imagine this little 9 to 10 month kitty was able to make an attack plane, the first time she was outside.
After much work I manage to get her down and I removed this box
From that time I knew cats can not only think, they can think constructive.
