One note, the current first version of the Panthers uses a wheel chassis based on the Leopard-2A4, which was the last version that Rheinmetall held exclusive ownership rights for the design. However, they also currently finetune the final stages of developement of a completely new chassis that will complement the new turret and design better, I assume. Right now one verison of the Panther can be produced, and two more, even more modern versions will soon enter production.
Rheinmetall cooperates with Kraus-Maffay-Wegmann (KMW) to build actual verisons of the Leopard-2, and their introduction of the Panther has caused hot blood between the two, because KMW is angry that RM - a claimed business partne rin the Leo-2 project - at the same time fields a direct competitor to the Leopard-2. The two sides do not see eye to eye, and the company bosses are said to be unable to stand each other.
