The son of a veterinarian and VF-11’s youngest pilot, Lieutenant (junior grade) Blake Moranville (right) took care of the Sun Downers’ mascot, Gunner. After Moranville was shot down over Indochina, the despondent Boston terrier would sniff returning pilots, searching in vain for his master. Sun Downers took the dog to live with the pilot’s father, and with help from French officials and the Foreign Legion, Moranville made his way to China and freedom. When he returned home, the aviator had a joyful reunion with Gunner.
