Wonder if that doubles as a chimney pipe hole.Its main purpose is to allow use of the tent in terrain where you have little room, so you can just put it around a tree without needing the center support pole. Another case would be if you want to use only a half tent (you can remove one wall), which wouldn't allow for the center pole to be used. I think the dark patch on the side might be the spot for the chimney.
