View Full Version : Veterans Day 2022
Happy Veterans day to all my fellow countrymen who once wore the uniform of our nation.
We have a bit of a different slant to 11/11 than our British and Commonwealth Friends. To us it is the day that we appreciate those who have served their country honorably. A day for old men to pin on a medal or wear an old cap and be thanked for their service by a grateful public. Unlike Armistice Day it is not supposed to be a somber remembrance of the dead but rather a celebration of the living.
Our day for (what should be solemn) remembrance is Memorial Day where we pay homage to those who gave their lives in service to our country.
There is also a third holiday called Armed Forces Day (although nobody gets it off, including the Armed Forces), which is for those who are currently serving in the military.

Here’s me with two of my shipmates 1992. From left to right “Snacks”, our machinist who always seemed to have snacks in his pockets or eating something. “The Brit” a madman and gunner from Wales, and me “Sven”

We had to use our muscles to keep that beast on target. These days I think they’re all on stabilized mounts and controlled with a joystick. I tell ya these kids today have it made. :O:
Regardless of the type of mount it certainly could ruin anyones day on the water, especially using API :D

I'm very pleased to see this day remembered here in Subsim. I had a a chance to come in and post this thread. I'm thrilled someone ( August ) beat me to it. :Kaleun_Thumbs_Up:
Happy Veteran's day To all of my fellow country men who answered the call. To you as well August and Rockstar. Former Submariner ETSN comes to mind as well. For me, It's a day to honor those who served And recognize and remember their sacrifices.
I know that former Subsim member Sailor Steve was a Navy vet too. My thoughts are with his loss as well, today.
This is me in Holland in the summer of 1979.

Thank you. Does Germany have anything like Veterans day or Armistice Day?
BTW some of my forefathers were on the other side too:

Like we see now in Ukraine-Volunteers are fighting on both side of the war-The same happened during both World Wars. In the village where my mom was born in southern Jutland many of the men let them enrolled into the German army or Allied.
There were even German who had fled Germany before the war started, who signed up for fighting for the allied.

I met the son of Hanns-Joachim Gottlob Scharff. He was an Army Chaplain at TRADOC Fort Monroe, VA when it was headquartered there. Great guy, war is a dirty business, but he was very fond and proud of his father.

Not really, or only 'in a way'.
There was none in the Weimar Republic.
There were "Hero remembrance days" that were abandoned after 1945, often created during WW2 of course.
There is a "national remembrance" or "memorial day", but the date changed, also its content.
Now it is november, 13th.

I looked this guy up and from what I read his son has good reason to be proud of his father.

I guess it is tough to separate the individual from the cause they fought for but many of them, like my grandfather and his three brothers and their father in the war previous, were just simple farmers who were called into service by their country and like his father and two of three brothers, many of them gave their lives defending it. They deserve to be remembered.

That’s an LAV-25. Basically serves the same tactical role for the Marines as the Bradley does for the Army. Fast as hell on the road and packs a punch with the 25 mm Bushmaster chain gun.

The original Devil Dog?
No. He was the original Georgetown Hoya dog, but over time, that changed into a bulldog.
He was a Boston Terrier mutt.
