When I see a European red Eichhörnchen, I immediately feel joy and my heart becomes lighter a bit. Its inevitable. Its more than just being amused, its real joy. I am convinced of: Eichhörnchen bringen Freude in das Leben. I could watch them hours and hours, and in fact I do, via my wildlife cam. When one of those little Fellnasen crosses my way, it sticks on my mind, and I still smile long after the encounter has ended.

If I would have the space and place, I would be a squirrel rehabber, no doubt on that. I have the time, the (theoretical) knowledge, even the emergency equipment (though I do not expect seriously the lightning will ever struck my place...) and the love for it. I have all what it takes - just not the place. A tragedy! At least I can maintain nut-bars and fill-em-up drinking stations in the garden and film them there, and this way help to increase their chances to get over the winter. Of hunger and weakening from it they must not die, at least this I can make sure. And the have mapped the place, they know it since their first months exploring the world when they left their mother.

Of the three brothers that I follow and observe since 2020, and who now lived through their third summer, two are still coming frequently, and currently daily again, collecting nuts like crazy. Kira had health issues, but seems to have fully recovered. Taro is as confident and fit and calm and resting in himself as he always has been. Only Sari is MIA.

I am surprising myself, but I take great joy from them. If one day they will not come anymore, I will really miss them. The European red squirrel can live up to 10-12 years in a well-cared "Voliere", but in freedom they live only 3-5 years, due to the stress and exhaustion, many get killed earlier by predators. American grey squirrels (sciurus virginensis) can live up to 25-28 years! In germany, squirrels are under spoecial protection of the law. Unfortunately that really needs to be so, the population struggles. In the first summer, six diofferent an imals frequen tly came to my feeders. Now, its two left.

I am mad for squirrels.

Ukraine Girl Bereft Without Her Cat is Reunited Thanks to Kind Strangers in 5 Countries and 7,000 Miles

A truly astonishing story of war-time goodwill to mend a 10-year-old’s broken heart will bring a tear to almost anyone’s eyes.
Nearly a dozen people, most of whom never met little Agnessa, all took turns helping to get her cat Arsenii travel-ready, out of Ukraine, across Europe, across the Atlantic Ocean, and all the way to the San Francisco Bay Area so the two could be reunited.

It all started on that fateful late February morning as Russian forces poured over the border into their southern neighbor. The Bezhenar family decided to flee Odessa, but just didn’t have the means to take an animal along.
After arriving in a refugee camp in Romania, the family was linked via a refugee program to a man in the Bay Area who had opened the doors of a second house he had to the Bezhenars for 2 years.

No doubt blessings were counted, but it was after the family were settling in that German stewardess Dee Harnish, who had kept in touch with them, discovered that the Bezhenars had left a family member behind.
“She [Agnessa] missed sleeping with her cat and she missed hugging him, she missed everything about the cat because she had grown up with him,” Mrs. Maria Bezhenar told Harnish.

Harnish then telephoned another flight attendant, Viola, who rescues animals, who from her home in Hawai’i telephoned an animal rescuer in Houston, Angelica, who laid the groundwork for the rescue. The next person on the call sheet was Maria’s brother-in-law, who was taking care of Arsenii. The man not only vaccinated and microchipped the cat, but got him a passport as well—before driving him on his motorcycle across the border to Moldova.

From there, another man drove him to Bucharest, where another family of refugees took Arsenii in, after which Mimi Kate, an animal rescuer on holiday in Greece volunteered to cut her vacation short to pick up Arsenii in Romania, but all of the cat’s documents had to be checked there, rather than in the U.S., since he came from a non-EU country.

A tuk-tuk driver, as if the story couldn’t find room for more characters, helped out, and drove Arsenii and Kate from Bucharest back to make her flight in Athens. Via Montreal and Seattle, Aresnii put 7,000 miles under his paws. https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Featured-Ukrainian-girl-with-cat-submitted-by-Moore-PR-firm-696x435.jpg

I am a big outdoor animal fan. Mainly because the more outside animals I attract, the more excited my cat gets.

I feed them a variety of nuts; peanuts, pecans and hazelnuts. The most squirrels I ever attracted was 12. They will all come to my backyard. I also give them peanuts in the shell which they find even more delightful.

I also have 4 bluejays who have taken up residence outside my home, and I have a couple of Downy woodpeckers and there is a beautiful Northern Flicker that shows up a lot.

Your european squirrels do seem much prettier. Mine have very bushy tails and thick coats, but they are very rat like in looks. They also seem to be very husky and muscular, but that might be the nuts... I will have to take some pictures. They are so tame from the feeding that I can come within feet of them even when walking my cat on her leash.

I make sure i don't overfeed them of course, and only feed during certain times of the month.

Thank you Platapus and Shady Bill for your inspire ful story.

I myself hope to win the big one in lotto-when I does I will open a few farms around in the country Denmark.

It will be ordinary animals you see on a farm-Cows, pigs, sheep a.s.o
Only different will be-They will not be killed or in other way be harmed-It will be their otium

Only when an animal get so sick that there no cure-I will put it to eternal rest. Done by a vet.

You have several different tree squirrel species in Americ, we have just one. The one you describe, grey, big, strong, is probably the American grey squirrel, sciurus virginensis. They are bigger, more robust, they form social groups and thus are probably more intelligent and more courageous, they live longer, and they can eat some more different stuff without getting problems that would put our red ones (sciurus vulgaris) in serious danger (many peanuts, or too many acorns). Peanuts with shells practically always have microfunghi on the shell whcih can put our squirrels in danger, the poor little things are extremely sensitve, they also cannot digest them well , since peanuts are not nuts, but legumes. Ameicna squirrel shave th eneded encymes, European squirrels have them not. If they eat only acorn, they starve to death.

The American red squirrel and the European red squirrel are not the same, they are quite different in fact, the US boys are way more aggressive, for exmaple, and can be very noisy. The Japanese red squirrel (sciurus lis) however is very close, genetically, to the European one.

Your grey squirrels even pick fights with rattlesnakes - and win! They also have partial immunity to the poison.

We have two populations of US greys in Europe, in britain, and northern Italy and now Switzerland, Austria. The british population carries a virus to which the grey ones are immune but that is absolutely lethal for European squirrels, also, the grey ones are stronger and more aggressive and push back red populations where they meet. There is no chance of coexistence, where the species meet, the red ones go MIA. The Italian population is apparently free of the virus, but it spreads, the alps are no more a natural containment barrier. I fear in the long run, over the next decades, this and the climate drama will let the red squirrel go extinct in most of Europe. Yes, they are cuter, very much so. But also weaker, smaller, fleeing from meeting other squirrels, and more vulnerable. Too many of them die early. Only in forests with dense vegetations of firs and spruces they can outlast the grey ones, which prefer decidious and mixed forests. Also, the presence of tree martens kill red squirrels, but kill even more grey squirrels since they do not know our tree martrens and thus are not evolutionary adapted. Where grey and red squirrels and martens come together its good for the red and not good for the greys.

Life expectancy varies widely between squirele species. We have only one tree squirrel, and one ground squirrel species: alpine marmots.

Nice story and picture.

(Partially) domesticated animals benefit from physical closeness and social touch just like humans do, they have comparable hormonal reactions and brain stimulations during such perceptions. I stopped laughing a long time ago when some pet owners cuddle their animals or, like the girl in the picture, take them to bed with them, regularly or occasionally. It makes sense.

Okay birdy, here's the deal: claws off my squirrels, and you and me can get along nicely. ;) Go after them, and I turn your little feathery neck further than even an owl would like. :D

An eagle owl once chased me out of the entrance to an abandoned mine in a forest in Osnabrück. That bird was not small, and it was angry, I could tell that from that it returned and came back after me for a second try, then returned into the cave, so it did not flee, but definitely defended what its consideredd to be its territory or home.

I was absolutely unexpecting something like that happening: to meet a wild and angry big owl in such a small forest in a cave during daylight was something I simply did not had on my radar screen. I mean, "wilderness" in Germany usually is nothing but a bigger park.

Both birds ended the unwelcomed meeting unharmed and without injuries.

Question, btw: can you just keep a wild-born squirrel in the US, Canada?
I'm asking because in Germany you would slam into serious confrontation with the law (maximums of 2 years prison penalty, 50,000 Euros penalty), for our red European squirrels are under special protection over here, their population is - well, lets say their situation is not easy.

First of all THANK You for posting these feel good stories in my thread and sorry for not being active in posting myself.

Skybirds two latest post about Squirrels made me remember an article in a Danish newspaper.

(Only translating some part of it)

Can't find the article
It's about this grey Squirrel from northern part of USA who has become burden for our own Red coloured squirrel.
I found this part on wiki about this Squirrel eastern gray squirrel

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_gray_squirrel#Displacement_of_red_squirrel s

Let some people give an answer and then we return to posting feel good stories.

The viciousness and cold-heartedness of some "people" sometimes leaves me speechless. Mieses Drecksstück. Having taken a club and killing the poor thing with one stroke would be more understandable than this (which in no way means I say one should do it). May she kiss a bridge pillar exactly from the front on her next trip on the highway.

It makes me furious when humans use their claimed superiority to torement weaker, smaller creatures. Das ist das allerletzte.

This world would be a much better place if humans would be more willing and able to see that not only humans feature a soul, but the other creatures sharing this world and life with us, too. But when I see a wet market in Asia or an industrial slaughterhouse in the West or read the bible's message of that man should subjugate all world to his will, it makes me wanting to vomit.

This couple are squirrel rehabbers, I had some contact with them some time ago. They keep abandoned baby squirrels and rescued emergency cases, after the animals are nursed at home and later being placed in an aviary in a nearby commercially-run park-forest with wildlife for a period of time, and then get released upon suitability and individual status. From finding a newborn baby to releasing it if all went well is a job of around 13-17 weeks. In the first few eeks your life runs, all day and night, in 120 minute intervals, due to the need to constantly feed them and stimulate their digestion. Its a full time job, and its exhausting over the months if you are aloien and cannot take turns with somebody else. People finding a squirrel and thinking they can handle it themselves usually completely underestimate the effort needed. It makes a mess of all your time planning, job, and social life, everything. Day and night. And squirrels are extremely individualistic, all have individual characters, and the red ones we have in Europe are a very sensible species and are not the easiest to keep.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxnaIuKtLFA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVfCKar6tnQ

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJTinpDERPY

If I would have more space or another free room, and options for an aviary in a suitable forest reserve nearby for the endphase, I would be a rehabber myself, with love. I tick almost all the boxes for rehabbing squirrels: the knowledge, the will, the love, the free time, the stressfree and calm environment at home, the money. Just that I do not have the space. I am sad for that. You cannot keep squirrels in your appartement if you do not completely squirrel-proof if (they are rodents... and they pee everywhere). So I must leave it to care for the three wild ones we have in the garden, whom I know since they were teens, and who I care for and observe since spring 2020. Greet again my three "Nussketiere":Kira, Taro and Sari.

Its amazing how adaptable wildlife in urban areas can be. There is no tree and bush in the street.
https://youtu.be/fJKGVHtfoH8
But thats what evolution theory is about. It means that life that manages to ever newly adapt to ever changing living conditions in its habitat, will surivive. No word on "natural" or "untouched by civilization".

"Silent" squirrels...?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uo1gIcfNePM

Very clear recording quality.

I add to it: if a European red squirrel looks relaxed like a cat that has rolled up comfortably, maybe the squirrel even raises one or both front paws to the chest as if resting and being at ease (and looking especially cute that way) , it means exactly the opposite. This is the "scanning" posture, all senses, ears and eyes, are at their maximum performance, and the animal frooze, not to be seen easily by possible predators and to alloow its eyes maximum perfokmance (they see sharp on all their retina, not just in one focus point like humans do). It means that something has alarmed it and that it now carefully scans the environment for threats and dangers. So, what in a cat expresses relaxation and comfort, in a European red squirrel means that it is on its guard and is alarmed.

The lamenting sound you hear in the video, the sad howling low whistle, also expresses alarm, reaction to something bad that happened, and warning others, expressing stress, being on guard.

Some of these sounds are created deep in the belly, and not in the jaw, throat and lungs. Squirrels can at the same time eat and produce these sounds. If you listen close enough you can hear that even small squirrels, even babies already make sounds when eating.

Male animals sometimes make sounds that mimic sounds of young animals, thjis is mostly in mating season, they do so in the presence of females to calm them down and relax them by pretending to be "harmless" :D kid animals.

That looks like an Americna chipmunk to me.

Note: I dont know about chipmunks (obviously it worked here), but NEVER feed European red squirrels with something containing cowmilk. NEVER. European red squirrels cannot digest it and are at high risk to suffer from diarrhoe that kills them, no matter their age.

Almonds are another total no-go. Peanuts and acorns (!) also are not good, and can kill them if too much, too often.

Lovely. Subtitles, if you go to youtube.

Max Raabe is most well-known over here (and from tours in the US and other countries) for his showprograms in which he sings songs from the 20s and copies the style of the shows of that era.

edit:

Today is a good day to be happy
If happiness is at the door, then I'll let it in.
Good day, dear luck, good to see you
Coffee or tea? You don't want to leave right away
I'll be relaxed too, don't hold on tight
Cause I know you'll stay if you're let go
What brings me happiness? One thing is clear
Don't ask me how I am 'cause you weren't there
Today is a good day to be happy
Today is a good day to be happy
That's why you come in handy
It's about time
Now happiness has been sitting on the couch for so long
I feel very good, but then I think, "Ouch!"
Slowly comes the bad conscience
Won't others miss the happiness now?
I can't say it should go now
To have happiness in the house is very nice
I'm quite stunned by the situation
Maybe I am spoiled, but what does it matter, because
Today is a good day to be happy
Today is a good day to be happy
That's why you come in handy
I didn't realize, but now I see
Today is a good day to be happy
If it would only stay for me
It's about time
Today is a good day to be happy
Today is a good day to be happy
It's about time

Was verschafft mir das Glück?

It's crazy where squirrels sometimes build their nests, in the most impossible places. On that one single thin tree right in the centre of a noisy high traffic crossing. Or directly at humans on the windowsill. Sometimes its really hair-raising!

This is just cute and lovely.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7KwTiDkcis

European red squirrels always have 3-6 nests in operation at the same time. In winter the walls are much thicker, up to 15cm, the temperature difference between inside and outside can be 10 degrees. The birth nest is particularly large and gets cleared after about 5-7 weeks regardless of danger situation, probably because of pollution and the risk of parasite infestation.

Years ago. a man sold his beloved Chevrolet Impala SS to make ends meet. The gentleman had a young wife and two young sons and reluctantly sold his beloved car.

Years later, the now grown up sons searched for and located the exact car their dad once owned. They purchased the car and surprised their dad. This has to be a great man and father to inspire his kids to locate the exact car that once belonged to their dad. They understand the sacrifices their parents made for them then and wanted to pay them back. :Kaleun_Thumbs_Up:

This is the feel good thread, so lets feel good - with a relaxed and laid back day of holiday durign a summer day at the Schlachtensee in Berlin. Simply a calm, laid-back mood.

Hundekehlesee, Grunewaldsee, wetland Riemeisterfenn, Krumme Lanke and Schlachtensee form a long chain of lakes that run the entire length of Grunewald along its northeast-southwest axis. They form popular recreational areas with proximity to the Havel in the west, and the Wannsee, which in summer and winter undoubtedly belong to the absolute jewels of the city and are very popular with walkers and cyclists as well as paddlers and bathers. I have also enjoyed spending time there in the past. The real estate prices for the Grunewald houses, however, are among the most expensive in the city - ask no more, it's better that way.

Enough learned, now go to chill!

Original Hobbit villages - in Switzerland. Sonlerto, and Sabbione.

Ironically these places now look like feel-good-places, but originally the nowadays idyllic looks stem from a past of pitiful poverty, most extreme living conditions and very very hard labour. Not to mention hunger, and biting cold in winter.

These are from a couple I was in contact with for some time until a year ago, contact broke off again. They are semi-pro squirrel rehabbers in their free time and and are almost exclusively engaged with this task in their free time. Over the season, a few dozen youngling and injured furballs go through their hands, in this time they give up their living room and turn it into as squirrel camp unilt they finally go into a voliere in a forest nearby, from where they later get elased if they are fit for free life. Usually that last phase is 2-4 weeks, it depends, its about getting used to sounds, smells, temperatures, weather. The animals later get suppoorted form free feeders unbti,t hey hopefully have build their own nests, and learned to feed and maybe move away.

29 Species Have Recovered Enough in Australia to be Taken Off Endangered List–a Milestone for Celebration

A large research project studying endangered species in Australia has tallied 29 recovered species—all animals that can be safely de-listed from the country’s endangered species list.

Australia’s Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act currently lists 446 species of animals in genuine need of protection, but 29 of those are no longer in need—15 mammals, 8 birds, 4 frogs, a reptile, and a fish.

Among these critters are the golden, Western barred, and Eastern barred bandicoots, Western quoll, sooty albatross, waterfall frog, Flinder’s Range worm-lizard, yellow-footed rock wallabies, greater bilby, humpback whale, growling grass frog, Murray’s cod, and others.

Australia has been a focus of endangered species conservation for decades because so many of the animal varieties are found nowhere else.

Invasive predators introduced and living here for decades, including foxes and cane toads, have proven highly disruptive to local wildlife like bandicoots and bilbies.

Unlike America’s ESL, the EPBC doesn’t mandate that species be reviewed regularly for recovery. These large scientific papers are rare and represent moments to celebrate for Australia’s conservationists.

The paper, published in Science was conducted by a variety of Australian academic institutions and concluded that conservation managers should aim to measure success at least in part through documentation of recoveries based on stability, ranges, and populations of the current day, even though this represents a smaller fraction of what these were before Australia was colonized.

I just love my little wild friends. The three Nutketeers are four years old now, and one of them has become quite familiar with me, does not flee anymore, stay sin the tree when I refill the nutbar, the other two also are far from panicking anymore when I come. They recognize me and got used to me.

Its a new cam, the old one got wet inside, the new one has better image quality, but I have changed the stand meanwhile, its too close and doe sleave oput a few spaces that shoudl, be covered in that tree/bush.

In Germany, only 2-3 European red squirrels out of ten survive the first year, only 1 in ten gets three years old, and not even 1 in hundred gets 5 years old. The species can live for 10, rarely 11 or 12 years in captivity and with good care. These three nutketeers, possibly brothers, are on a good way to triumphantly beat the statistics: after three years, all three of them are still alive, and well and strong. I allow to attribute some of that to my good care, limited however to only supply clean water in hot summer as well as freeezign winter, and always sufficient nuts for everybody. They do not take any fruits, vegetables or cushioning material for the cobble, I tried all that. Only hazelnuts and walnuts and sunflower seeds.

I could watch squirrels for hours. Thes ethree I can reocngoze not just by their colpours, but also by their hbehaviors and perosnalöity chracateristics. They are very different. All squirrels are. Its very surprising to learn how complex personalities they have if only one cares to spend some time and watch them closely. Just that they are not the brightest lamps in the lamp shop, I fear. :)
Enjoyably, the three are not alone. Last year no new squirrels showed up and stayed, but currently I have three new guests, plus a very small, unsecure fourth little cutie that you can see at the beginning of the video, it is very insecure, and lacks the maturoity of the others. Interestingly, the other, bigger and older animals do not attack it. I think it left its family too early, or the mother died, or she chased it away or left it behind.
