View Full Version : torpedoes going deep on launch
HI all my attacks in rough seas don't go well my torpedoes go way deep upon launch instead of the depth to hit the ship is this normal ?
for info I'm running living silent hunter 3 version 2022 am in middle of 1941 and my torpedoes of both types in rough seas upon launch go down instead of up to the set depth

This would be the function of the h.sie torpedo failure feature. It forces you to set deeper torpedo depth in rough seas. As a general rule you want to set depth at or deeper than 0.4 x wind speed in meters per second.
15 m/s = 6m.
You can get away with shallower in some cases but the likelihood of a failure increases. You can disable the feature in the h.sie options selector if desired.
no i dont think you getting my problem when i fire my torpedoes in rough weather regardless of the depth setting nearly all go very deep 20m or so in the first 5seconds

The Germans, just the Americans, had issues with torpedo failures early in the war. Both nations (and others) had issues with the "magnetic" pistols failing to properly detect and detonate, but they also had issues with running depth, in that when the torpedoes were tested, "practice" head were used to make adjustments. Once a warhead was fitted on the torpedoes, they ran deeper than set. There was a plethora of troubles...

Sorry.
Perhaps someone else with more experience with Living Silent Hunter can answer. :ping:

I don't think you understand what I do understand... Rough seas, torpedoes run deep... When a torpedo is initially launched, it will drop in depth until it gets up to speed, then the depth control will attempt to regulate. But in addition, notice how ships ride in the ocean? They kind of "bounce" up and down with the waves. Notice how torpedoes "ply" the waves? They kind of bounce up and down as they try to maintain depth. Notice torpedoes run deep due to BdU failure? Notice that the magnetic pistol fails? Not a good combination. Read the articles at those links above for more. Those issues are modeled in most mods, as well as the Stock game. You just might not be able to attack in rough seas. Have you used the external camera to try to follow a torpedo to a target, and verify how they run?
Now, part 2 of the problem could well be your mod activation, if using any. Be certain you followed all instructions concerning any mods used. If you are not too far into a career, empty the Save folder ("C:\Users \UserName \Documents \SH3" by default), and try to do a new career. That will create a new Save data structure next running of the game. Any leftovers from Stock or other mods that might have been in the Save folder can cause issues. Any added mods that are not compatible with the mod currently used can cause issues. Any mods added or removed after you start a career can cause issue. Shelling out to Windows while playing the game can cause troubles. Most things being computer-dependent.
You report a problem, but have not fully described it. If you still have issues, post back with your mod list, a description of your targeting procedures and pictures if possible. Right now, this is kind of like throwing darts while blindfolded, without more info...

Deep running is a feature of H.sie's patch to sh3.exe, which is included in many mega-mods. It is meant to simulate various torpedo running failures.
The H.sie mod installation is easy to mess up, I understand especially on Windows 11. Don't ask me - I run Linux which lets me do what I want :03:
Search for the file Readme_V16B1.pdf Read the pdf and be enlightened.
Early war attacks in rough weather become extremely challenging. H.sie's options selector can be used to turn it off, although the game is much better with it on IMHO.
I shall explain in rough weather the majority of my torpedoes even in 1942 are going very deep upon launch not after 20 seconds upon launch they dive down regardless of depth settings
H.Sie;s Torpedo Failure Fix - This is from the H,Sie's ReadMe (I cut out 90% and just included what I think your looking for ... hopefully). Even if your solution numbers are perfect ...
"This Fix tries to model the torpedo crisis until 1942 and also tries to model duds The fix models a failure by simply setting the torpedo depth to 25m".
