View Full Version : RIP Sailor Steve

I received an email today, I am following up on it. Confirmed: Steve passed peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 30th.

Sailor Steve Bradfield has passed away.

He was one of our wittiest and friendliest. A member since the beginning, Steve attended the Texas SUBSIM meets, was a quiet but reliable moderator, and flight sim enthusiast as well as a subsimmer.

Steve has been struggling with severe health problems for the past 4 years. I spoke with him earlier this year and his spirit was flagging but he was still the Sailor Steve I have always known.

Rest your oars, Sailor Steve.

Heck, that hits down.

I never met him, I sometimes banged heads with him, but far more often I had friendly, smart conversations with him on the boards or in a few PMs. He seems to have been witty, kind, and caring. He also is one of the oldest names I recall on this forum board, a brand I got used to, so to speak.

Bon voyage, captain. It was a good experience to "meet" you.

I am very sorry to hear of Steve. Like Skybird, Steve and I had some issues early on when I joined Subsim. We privately spoke and cleared a lot of things up. Once things had been straightened out, I found we had a number of things in common including music and motorcycles, etc... and we spoke a good deal on them.

I found Steve to be pretty interesting and knowledgeable. I know Steve was also a military vet which immediately earned him my respect. I tried to follow up on Steve's health issues that he wrote of here in Subsim but I also wanted to respect his privacy and didn't want to ask any questions besides, " How is Steve doing. "

I also worry about Clay, another Subsim member who also has had serious health issues.

Deepest condolences to Steve's family and his friends here at Subsim.

Rest in peace, Steve.

I can't put in words my sadness for this loss :(

He had been around subsim for so many years, it's hard to even try to imagine this place without him, his wit, his friendliness, his enthusiasm ... :wah: Despite his declining health, all news from him we got via Neal in the last years showed always the same positive and friendly guy with a will to keep hanging on to all good things in life he liked.

Rest in peace my friend, until we meet again some day. It was great and enrichening to meet you. Salute!

What an enormous loss - what a huge, inestimable and irreplaceable loss. We two also had some clashes (beep-beep) but this hugely intelligent guy never EVER bore a grudge. We might have disagreed rather crossly at times (and I also got canned by Steve) but in another thread on the following day it was all forgotten; I always admired that quality in him so I always made a point to send him sincere birthday greetings. I just hope I didn't upset him too much the rest of the time

So long Steve - I just told Moira and she is so sad too

I read the sad news on Facebook yesterday. Steve had a huge presence here when I joined many years ago. Though I have not been nearly as active as I once was, I always checked in here every day, when able, to keep up on what's going on. Reading of Steve's declining health, the last few years had me worried about him. With the lack of word on him the last few months, I feared the worst but, hoped for the best. He was, and always will be, greatly missed around here. RIP Sailor Steve.

Confirmed: Steve passed peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 30th.

Over the years I have spent countless hours talking to him almost on a daily basis via Skype but a couple of years ago all that came to an abrupt end without any prior warning.

Realising or should I say fearing all was not well I contacted Neal advising him of the situation and asking him to make efforts to contact him on my behalf but all to no avail which confirmed to me that something was seriously wrong.

This morning I have been made aware of Steve's passing and to say I am utterly devastated is one huge understatement.

Below is a post made by Steve over at Subsim which sums up the friendship and bond we shared for many years.

We finally arrived at Neal's, and we finally at long last got to shake hands. And UnderseaLpcl. And Chad. And Chad's dad. And TarJak. And Dan the developer man. And Jimbuna...especially Jimbuna. I'm not sure what it was, because we don't really talk more than some others, and we don't have anything special in common besides excessive posting, but for some reason when he stood up I knew I couldn't just shake his hand; and I think he knew it too. So we gave each other a big hug. A big Manly hug, mind you, with the well-defined Manly back-slapping; but a hug nonetheless. And some others, I'm not sure who because we all met for sure the next day and I don't remember who all stayed extra late just so they could meet "Sailor Steve", whoever that guy is.

Lay down your oars my friend and begin your eternal patrol.

Until we meet again.

This thread is impressive. I hope somebody, Neal has made Steve's family aware of it, I think to read here and see what a big mark Steve has left in the mind of so many foreign people may be a comfort for them. Most people posting here never met Steve personally, and still many of us obviously found something in his interactions with others in the forums that impressed us quite much.

This is very sad news indeed. Sailor Steve was a mainstay of Subsim and someone who had a deep impact on may of us here. When I migrated to Subsim form the old Wolfpack League, I was a bit hesitant about posting, social interaction never being a strong point for me; I finally posted a response to a thread, IIRC, about earthquakes, giving a detailed summation of the major quakes that hit Los Angeles between 1971 and 1994; I was surprised when there was an immediately follow post from Sailor Steve wherein he not only 'graded' my grammar, he also gave a critique of my exposition on the topic; thankfully, Steve gave me good marks on both...

I had a couple of PM experiences with Steve over the years; once, Steve had to admonish myself and a couple of other members who had gotten a bit heated about some topic; I felt I owed Steve an apology for causing him to have to intervene, so I sent him a PM with my apologies; I really didn't expect to hear anything back, but I was surprised when a response shewed up in my inbox; I thought for sure Steve was going to tell me I was brigged, but, instead he was very gracious in accepting my apology and in assuring me all was well on the matter; there was another time I felt the need to apologize to him and, again, he was gracious and conciliatory...

Sailor Steve was always a gentleman at heart and one of the most valued members of Subsim. When he began to be seen less often on Subsim, I, like others, feared for his well-being, given his health challenges; I kind of had the feeling he had "gone to ground", something I have noted about not a few of the people my age who are facing uncertainty over health and longevity; I only hope there was someone around him to ease his transition to peace; someone like Sailor Steve deserved not to be alone on the start of his final voyage...

I hope Sailor Steve has found his peace at last and that he is being rewarded for the good, good person he was, and, if the way he he has touched the lives and hearts of those he knew or knew him accounts towards the good, then his reward will be great indeed...

RIP Sailor Steve...

While we barely exchanged a few words here on Subsim, I have a lot to thank him for, as it was his post (https://www.subsim.com/radioroom//showpost.php?p=2506009&postcount=4) that inspired me to start working on a coastal ships mod (and to learn a lot about maritime history and 3d modeling in the process).

Steve was a massive influence on a young Red October1984 several years ago whether he realized it at the time or not. I found Subsim and kind of dove headfirst even deeper into my hobby of simulation gaming.

Those of you that were around about ten years ago (holy ****, it's been eleven years since I joined ) know that I was extremely active here. I spent nearly all of my spare time under the waves of the Atlantic in Silent Hunter 3, perusing sonar screens in Dangerous Waters, and almost as often dabbling into more serious flight simulators. When I wasn't doing that, I was de-stressing and hanging out on the forum.

Steve was one of the biggest positive influences here during that time and though we butted heads on occasion, we had some very productive and formative discussions behind the scenes. He helped me through several rough times in my life and I am glad to have known him. I was saddened by his continually declining medical situation and I was fortunate to be able to thank him for everything he did for me.

To a genuinely great guy, mainstay of the community, fellow brother in arms, and a friend. Cheers, brother.

The name "Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club" was used from 1961 when the Seventh Fleet arrived to the waters off Vietnam. The qualifications for membership broadly construed to any service-member assigned to 7th Fleet, from the ships on the gun line, to aircraft sorties from the carriers, to riverine units, and Marines on the shore. This was a patch he Damn well earned.
